Update from Student Engagement Librarian (Heather: 5 mins)
Student Advisory Committee
A monthly meeting with students from graduate and undergraduate programs and headed by Julie Hannaford
where students provide feedback on particular library issues and they can bring issues from fellow students.
Students are unfamiliar with the following resources/ services so marketing needs to be examined:

Libguides - students found them hard to find

AskChat- students were unfamiliar with it but thought it was useful

Suggested more info in frosh kits so the content that the library submits needs to stand out more.
Suggestions for events / partnerships between students and libraries:

Students are interested in partnering with libraries to create exhibits or displays – individual or part of a class.

Hands-on Library Fair with the technology and tools that library has for students to test out / explore
Suggestions for enhanced services

Loan options technology items (laptops, tablets, cables, plugs)

More technology in-group study rooms so they can practice (LED screens, etc.) or spaces like the new
presentation room at Gerstein

Finding out what software is on what computers are available across the libraries

Suggests improvements for the Library Resources / FixIt page in blackboard – expand it so it’s more useful
(there is a UTL group currently working on this issue)
Popular UTL Programs

Positive comments about Bella the therapy dog, snack during exams, massage and yoga in the library

Personal Librarian program – very positive about this initiative
Student Communication Summit in May 2013 and May 2014

2014 - Summit 2.0: Towards a Student Communication Strategy - Registration is open - event is May 16 http://studentlife.utoronto.ca/utcommsummit

Focuses on how we are communicating with students and they are responding.
UTComm Summit 2013 - Just in Time Slides

Initiative launched from first communication summits







Students noted that so much information is directed at them during Orientation in the beginning of the year
and most of it is forgotten.
They made the recommendation that the relevant information brought to them “just in time” (1-2 week
before) when the info would be the most useful.
Student Life has slides contain essential and concise information about what is happening on campus. The
slides are shown to first year and second year classes taking place in Convention Hall before classes.
Library has include slides on Libguides, Exam Repository (in Nov). Workshops, and CCR.
Question (Cris) – Are all classes in Convention Hall seeing the Just In Time slide or just Arts and Sciences (i.e.,
first year engineering course )
ACTION - Heather will check with Student Life.
ACTION - Contact Heather if you have content to submit – keep it broad
UTComm Summit 2013 – UTL Branding
Students noted that Branding is important – twitter linking to a page from the library website to show that it’s
from a trusted source
UTComm Summit 2013 - UTL = “One big happy family”

Keep in mind students view St. George Campus libraries “One big happy family” rather than individual
libraries at UTL.

They like the idea of one – stop shop for information

Keep this in mind when you are sending out messages, creating FAQS, etc.
6.


The course has run for a few years so there are plans to get in touch with previous participants to assess the
course.
Request for Observation – January

A librarian requested a teaching observation; CTSI is looking into offering this. Request CTSI to observe, talk
to them ahead of time, they come in and tape if I you like and then talk to you about areas you are
interested.

The librarian might be coming to speak to ILU and CTSI is just trying to figure out it if it’s possible to offer to
everyone.
Upcoming events:


only faculty members attending) http://www.teaching.utoronto.ca/topics/coursedesign/cdi.htm

April 15 – 1pm – 3pm
b.
April 29 – 10am – noon
c.
April 30 – 1 – 3 pm

will pick dates and Jenaya will check with Larry and work with Rita to send it out.
 Jenaya has sent out the ILU Report for the committee review, along with a list of activities ILU has
undertaken this past year.
Format of meeting:
 The question was raised if this meeting should be opened up to a wider group – town hall style? Could be
like a town hall interested in information literacy and might want to bring faculty members might bring
interesting dimension.
 What topics/ questions we might want to cover that we can provide Larry?
 Rita pointed out that early undergrads is a focus for Larry.
 Monique – At Reference Committee review meeting, Larry wanted to hear the committee’s vision of
information literacy rather than presenting a vision from administration because the committee members
are the experts. The Ref. Committee arranged for a few people present and Larry answered specific
questions.
