JOB DESCRIPTION
The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is a multi-disciplinary, primary and
tertiary referral University Teaching Hospital. It encompasses The National Cardiac
Surgery Unit, the National Lung Transplantation Unit, The National Spinal Injuries
Unit, Regional Gastrointestinal, Urology and Hepatobiliary Unit, Regional Oncology
Service, Hospital Dialysis Unit, Lung Cancer and Breast Cancer units and a
comprehensive full academic medical and surgical specialty compendium. In
association with The University College, Dublin it has a full medical undergraduate
teaching programme, and in association with the postgraduate colleges and faculties
encompasses postgraduate training.
The Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is an
academic teaching hospital unit where 160,000 examinations are performed
annually. The Department provides a service commitment encompassing virtually all
sub-specialties in diagnostic radiology and is staffed by 10.9 WTE consultant
radiologists and who represent a broad sweep of sub-specialty interest. The service
commitment seamlessly incorporates an active academic programme where
undergraduate teaching is carried out in association with the Faculty of Radiologists,
Royal College of Surgeons and full postgraduate training is provided for 11 junior
radiologists. There is an established scholarship programme with the European
Society of Radiology for visiting radiology fellows.
Present position is that of a general radiologist with extensive experience in cross
sectional imaging, in particular, CT imaging. The post will involve plain film reporting,
screening, and dedicated lists including CT, MRI and ultrasound. Experience in
PET/CT imaging would also be useful given the availability of this service on site and
the Mater’s role as a National Cancer Referral Unit. The successful candidate will be
expected to work as part of a multi disciplinary team and together with other
radiologists deliver multi disciplinary conferences and be involved in ongoing audit
and research. The successful candidate will participate in the Departmental On-Call
Rota. He/She will act as the local radiology lead in the development of imaging
services to the MED Unit and the A/E Department. Excellent interpersonal skills and
leadership qualities and an ability to deliver on targets are expected.
The Department of Radiology is moving to a new department in new Mater Hospital
Development in September 2012. Departmental equipment at that point will include
2 x 128 slice CT scanners, 2 SPECT/CT gamma cameras, a 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner,
6 ultrasound units including dedicated endoanal and interventional machines, 2
dedicated fluoroscopy interventional units, 5 general radiography rooms, a chest unit
and an on-site PETCT facility. The current Department is equipped with NIMIS
PACS.
The successful candidate will be expected to fully participate in the Radiology

QUALIFICATIONS
The following qualifications are required:
1.
Professional Qualifications
Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of
Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the
specialty of radiology.
2.
Age
Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified
as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation
(Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a
new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in
which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office
occurs.
3.
Health
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be fully competent and
capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of
health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render
regular and efficient service.
4.
Character
A candidate for and any person holding the post must be of good character.
5.
Entry to competition/recruitment process
For the purposes of eligibility for entry to any competition or recruitment
process associated with this post, a candidate cannot be appointed as a
Medical Consultant unless (s)he is registered as a Specialist in the Specialist
Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical
Council of Ireland. Successful candidate must be registered as a Specialist in
the relevant specialty on the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical
Practitioners maintained by the medical Council of Ireland within 180 days of
the day of interview. Should the successful candidate not be registered as a
Specialist at that time, the post may be offered to the next suitable candidate
(or, in the case of HSE posts, the Public Appointments Service may choose
not to recommend that candidate to the employer). Should no suitable
candidate exist, a further recruitment process may be initiated.

APPLICATION
1. Curriculum Vitae (fourteen unbound copies) including particulars regarding
qualifications, publications etc. should be forwarded to the Hon. Secretary,
Medical Board, Mater Misericordiae Hospital, 59 Eccles Street, Dublin 7 not
later than Friday 24th February 2012.
2. Each candidate shall submit, as references, the names, addresses and e-mail
details of at least three responsible persons to whom he/she is well known,
but not related, of which, at least, two shall be from a recent or current
employer.
3. Canvassing directly or indirectly by or on behalf of any candidate will
automatically disqualify such candidate.
4. Copies of professional and education certificates should be submitted with
curriculum vitae. Originals of these documents will be required at interview.
5. Candidates will be required to attend in person before an interview board
established by the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. The Board will
not be responsible for any expenses a candidate may incur in attendance for
interview.

PARTICULARS OF POST
1. The appointment is permanent and of a full-time nature – 37 hours per week.
2. The person appointed shall be on probation for 12 months.
3. The terms, conditions and benefits of the amended form of the Consultants
Contract 2008, approved by the Department of Health and Children will apply.
4. Annual leave will be in accordance with the Consultants Contract 2008. It will
be necessary to ensure that this leave is taken so that, on receipt of
notification, the Administrative Head of the Department/Specialty may make
appropriate cover and other arrangements.
5. The successful candidate must be eligible for appointment to the UCD Clinical
Pathway.
6. Acceptance of the Management structure of the Mater Misericordiae
University Hospital, as detailed in the rules of the hospital, is necessary.
7. The person appointed shall abide by the respective Ethical Policies approved
by the Board of the Management of the hospital.
8. All applications for special leave shall, in addition, be forwarded to the
Executive Council of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital for
consideration. No special leave may be taken without the prior approval of
the Executive Council of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
9. In the event of resignation a minimum of three months notice must be given in
writing to the authorities of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.

11. Remuneration shall be at Type B level in accordance with the terms and
conditions of the Consultant Contract 2008. Designation of Type B may be
subject to change in the context of the Mater Misericordiae University
Hospital’s strategic direction.
12. Garda Clearance – Arrangements have been introduced on a national level,
for the provision of Garda Clearance in respect of candidates for employment
in areas of Health Services where it is envisaged that potential employees
have substantial access to children or vulnerable individuals.
DUTIES
The person appointed will, in respect of the service commitment to the hospital be
required to carry out the duties of a Consultant Radiologist in the Mater Misericordiae
University Hospital.
These duties will include:1.

General Plain film Radiology reporting.

Reporting of cross-sectional imaging, including reporting of
ultrasound, MRI, PET CT, nuclear medicine and CT.
Performance and interpretation of fluoroscopic guided diagnostic tests
Competence in image guided interventional procedures also a
requirement.
Organise and take multidisciplinary radiology conferences as required.
Participate in departmental audit and teaching to undergraduate and
postgraduate trainees.

Organise and participate in post-graduate SpR training.
Update himself/herself in education and service technological and
other advances.

Cover for fellow Consultants during holiday sickness or other approved
absences.

The provision of a consultative service as required.
5.
Participation in the departmental on-call rota.

Manage as required patients in the Radiology Department or other such
departments as deemed necessary.
