Professional Qualifications Registration as a specialist in the Specialist Division of the Register of Medical Practitioners maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland in the specialty of radiology. 2. Age Age restriction shall only apply to a candidate where he/she is not classified as a new entrant (within the meaning of the Public Service Superannuation (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2004). A candidate who is not classified as a new entrant must be under 65 years of age on the first day of the month in which the latest date for receiving completed application forms for the office occurs. 3. Health A candidate for and any person holding the post must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the post and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service. 4. Job Description – Consultant Radiologist (POS) – Oct 2013 PARTICULARS OF POST The Department of Diagnostic Imaging, Mater Misericordiae University Hospital is an academic teaching hospital unit where over 167,000 examinations are performed annually. The Department is affiliated to University College Dublin, Ireland’s largest university. The Department provides a service commitment encompassing virtually all sub-specialities in Diagnostic Radiology and is currently staffed by 16 consultant radiologists, of whom 9 are full-time, and who represent a broad sweep of subspecialty interest. Members of the group are representatives on multiple national bodies dealing with all aspects of Clinical Radiology. The service commitment seamlessly incorporates an active academic programme where undergraduate teaching is carried out in association with University College Dublin (UCD) and full postgraduate training is provided for 11 Specialist Registrar trainees (SPR) Radiologists in association with the Faculty of Radiologists, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland. The SPR posts in this department are consistently amongst the top two most sought after for training programme applicants in Ireland. In addition, there is an established scholarship programme with the European Society of Radiology (ESOR) for visiting Radiology fellows. In March 2013 the Department was transferred to a new building as part of the Mater Campus Development. Two new dedicated Interventional Radiology rooms are included in the development. Two 128 slice Siemens CT units (1 located in the Emergency Department), in addition to 1.5 Tesla MRI, 9 ultrasound machines, digital radiography and 2 SPECT/CT scanners will be included in the new development. A dedicated PET/CT unit is located close to the main department. A second MRI scanner, a 3 Tesla Siemens Skyra MRI scanner is currently being installed in the new Department. The National Breast Cancer screening programme is also located on campus. The hospital is the National Cardio-Thoracic Surgical Centre and the site of the National Heart and Lung Transplant Unit. There are 16 multi-disciplinary conferences which are Consultant Radiologist led. In addition the hospital provides Radiology services for the Rotunda Hospital and through a shared service for Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital. The National Spinal Surgery unit is based at the hospital. MR imaging is absolutely central to all spinal imaging management and the Mater Hospital is one of two hospitals in Ireland to provide 24 hour MR Imaging on call. The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) opened at the Mater Hospital in July 2012. The demand for CT imaging has significantly increased from the second half of 2012 and into 2013. The Department of Radiology provides ready access to CT Imaging for Emergency Department patients. The Mater Hospital is a major centre for stroke service, with a total of 8 Consultant Neurologists sharing sessions at the hospital. Stroke management necessitates rapid access to CT examinations (as per FAST protocol). In addition these patients frequently need CT angiography of blood vessels in the neck. This is an important test to perform, but is very time consuming to interpret, performed by consultant Radiologists. An on-site PETCT service has been available for 7 years. A brain PET/CT service is also provided. This was the first PET/CT unit in an academic teaching unit in Ireland. The Candidate: Strong experience in CT and general reporting is a requirement. Chest Radiology experience is desirable but not essential. He/she will present and participate at Multidisciplinary team meetings (MDT), specifically the Chest MDT. There is an expanding Neurology and Stroke service at the Mater Hospital and additional experience in Neuroradiology would be of benefit. If necessary the candidate may be given additional time to train on a proleptic basis in either Chest Radiology or Neuroradiology. The candidate may be asked to assist at the Neurology MDT. The candidate may be asked to assist at the Neurology MDT. Strong cross sectional imaging experience and experience in CT and Ultrasound guided Interventions is a requirement. Fellowship level training is a minimum requirement. In addition to plain film reporting, he/she will supervise and interpret cross-sectional imaging, to include ultrasound, CT, and MRI. The candidate will be given the opportunity to interpret PET/CT studies in the Mater PET/CT Centre. The successful candidate will, in addition, be involved in on-going departmental audit quality assurance and research, and in providing teaching and supervision to SPR’s on the Faculty of Radiologists National Training Programme through the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. There will be full participation in the Radiology on-call roster and the successful candidate will be expected to provide cross cover and efficient service delivery. 1. The appointment is permanent and of a full-time nature – 39 hours per week. 2. The person appointed shall be on probation for 12 months. 3. The terms, conditions and benefits of the amended form of the Consultants Contract 2008, approved by the Department of Health and Children will apply. 4. Annual leave will be in accordance with the Consultants Contract 2008. It will be necessary to ensure that this leave is taken so that, on receipt of notification, the Administrative Head of the Department/Specialty may make appropriate cover and other arrangements. 5. The successful candidate must be eligible for appointment to the UCD Clinical Pathway. 6. Acceptance of the Management structure of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, as detailed in the rules of the hospital, is necessary. 7. The person appointed shall abide by the respective Ethical Policies approved by the Board of the Management of the hospital. 8.
