Please continue to send your child with boots and snow or splash pants. An extra pair of socks is a good idea too. As we read these stories we are also learning to read with lots of expression. Look forward to the novel coming home next week. In Music we learned that notes can stay the same, they can step and also leap. In Science we continue to be in awe of God's creation as we learn how God designed and provides for the creatures He has made. Why not ask your child to tell you all about fish. Grade 2A – Mrs. Geerlinks Dear Parents, I hope that you enjoyed your March Break with your family! The students came back refreshed and ready to do their work! This week in Bible, we began to explore the amazing sacrifice made by our Lord and Saviour. We will continue with our Easter stories next week, studying stories 88-91 (Before Pilate & Herod, The Crucifixion & Burial, and Resurrection & Witnesses). Students have also been busy writing letters. Be sure to take a look at their latest one. Ask your child about: pact, lilies, Grandparents Day practice, Malchus’ ear, and new centres. In Bible, we will be moving from Elijah to the work of Elisha and beginning on Esther (stories #59-61a). In Novel Study, we have started A Long Way to a New Land. We have also started practicing Grandparent’s Day songs, which are sounding fantastic! Please encourage your children to read often to strive to reach their goal for March. In this coming week before Easter, we plan to memorize the words of Christ from the cross. Our spelling is Unit 25. Our recorder song is #24, "Hush Little Baby". Many still need to spend time daily learning their times tables. With our plant study we hope to learn about leaves, flowers, and photosynthesis. Our Grandparents Day songs from the Sound of Music are going well. Have you thought about getting the needed attire? (See the note earlier in the newsletter.) Look for more information and completed work on Monday. On Thursday we plan to have an Easter assembly and our weekly quizzes. As you receive the Progress Reports, have you considered signing up for the Parent/Teacher conferences? Enjoy the beginning of spring, the extra evening light, and the last week of March as we get ready to remember all that Good Friday and Easter means. Blessings. Grade 3B – Miss Petersen Students were in fine form from the moment they returned from March Break. It was great to see eager and energetic students! We filled in a March Break At-a-Glance chart, finished up the $ sections of our math chapter, practiced various rolls in physical education, completed the painting portion of our big art project, wrote a long reading comprehension quiz for our novel study, had a wild and crazy game of “Boys versus Girls” math drill, and of course a few more things that kept us busy this week. I hope you a lovely weekend with your children, Parents! I look forward to meeting with some of you on Thursday evening for Parent-Teacher Conferences, to review any questions/concerns you might have about the 2nd term Progress Reports. Also, please don’t hesitate to give me a phone call if you would like to discuss something pertaining to the Progress Reports. Overall, Grade 3B is a very consistent and hardworking class! Most students had very similar results as 1st term. Reminders: Monday: Library Wednesday: Show and Tell for Girls Thursday: Show and Tell for Boys; Recorder Test on Song # 25 “Sanctus”; Memory Work: Philippians 3:15; General….Math Facts: Please practice times tables 0-8 at home. Students MUST practice at home for at least 5 minutes/day on a regular basis. We are not making good progress with the times tables this year, even though we are doing a lot of written and oral practice in the classroom. From Mrs. Korevaar Here is a look a next week. Bible stories will be: The Intertestamentary Period, The Preaching of John the Baptist, and The Baptism of Jesus. Spelling will be Lesson 24. We are learning about many different types of Poetry in Writer's Workshop and are planning to write Easter Acrostic Poems today. Grade 4A – Mrs. Baartman I hope you enjoyed the March Break and were able to spend some time resting and relaxing! I am happy that the students got right back into the regular routine and work load, feeling refreshed from the break! This week we began our new Easter unit talking about the unjust treatment shown to our Saviour, Jesus Christ; how He was mocked and rebuked and yet went so willingly to the cross to ultimately save our sins. What a blessing this is indeed! This week we also began our Geography unit on the countries of North and South America. The students have already completed one quiz on the continents and oceans of the world. Next week, the students will have a quiz on all of the countries of North America (spelling counts!) on Thursday. You can count on at least one quiz per week for the next while. This week the students also enjoyed Wacky Hair Day, which was enjoyed by students and teacher alike! Progress Reports are coming home today; parents, please take this opportunity to discuss successes, strengths, and areas of improvement for Term 3. Next week's Memory Work: Mark 4:26-27; Spelling Unit 26. Have a wonderful weekend! Grade 4/5 – Mrs. Zwiep Greetings, Parents! After a nice March Break, students have been working very diligently. This week students continued with the stories of Israel in the desert in Bible, wrapped up their current units in math and learned about the Huguenot Cross in social studies. There is only 1 week left for the March bookworm calendar. Please make sure your child has read the appropriate number of minutes and filled in their calendar properly. March calendars are DUE Tuesday, April 2. The food prize is chips (April 3) and the spirit day is Wacky Hair Day (March 20). Report cards are coming home today. It has been my pleasure and delight to teach your children again this term. They are a wonderful class and can be proud of their accomplishments over the second term. If you have any questions about the report card or your child’s progress, please feel free to set up and interview for next week or to call me at home. Next week will be busy with tests; please ensure that your child prepares adequately. A Bible test will be written on Tuesday based on the review that went home yesterday. On Wednesday a Language test will be written on Prepositions, Conjunctions, and Interjections; the students should also be familiar with the five other parts of speech (noun, verb, pronoun, adjective, and adverb); study sheets have been given to the students. The Spelling test for Lesson 27 and the memory work for next week John 14: 8-9, will be written on Thursday. Grade 6A – Mr. Enter I wish blessings upon you and your child as you review the progress report of the 2nd Term. I look forward to seeing parents for conferences on Thursday evening. As a class we have begun work on speech preparations. Most of us will be presenting an informative speech as opposed to persuasive. Additionally, a small amount of research may be needed but the bulk of the information should be coming from the student s own knowledge or reasoning. Parents, please discuss with your child their proposed speech topic. It is helpful to have parents engage us in thought regarding our research for this topic. Deadlines will be quite quick and successive, requiring students to keep up with the timelines. Coming up next week: Mon. – Library, Phys Ed; Tues.- Speech outlines due; Wed. – Singing Test, Music Quiz; Thurs. – Bible Test; Memory Work (Matt.4:29); Spelling Test. I look forward to seeing parents for conferences on Thursday evening. Grade 7A – Mr. Vander Deen Memory Work: Isaiah 53:4-6. Music: The music logs are due on Tuesday. Gr. 7 Science: Parents, students have started a new unit on Chemical Combinations. As part of the unit, students will be doing an independent study at home. They have two options; they may either do a series of experiments and write-ups at home or collect news articles about science from newspapers and magazines and do a brief write-up about them. Please ask your son/daughter for the handouts. Gr. 7 Math: There will be a math quiz on adding and subtracting fractions on Tuesday. Grade 7B – Mr. Slingerland We have finished the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. In case you were wondering, the British won. General Wolfe, who was killed in the fifteen minute battle, was hailed as a hero and had his body taken back to London. The Marquis de Montcalm, the leader of the French forces, was also killed in battle. His body was unceremoniously lowered into a hole conveniently made by a cannonball. Next week we will be looking at the American Revolution, the American attack on Quebec, and how droves of Loyalists ended up in Upper and Lower Canada. We have started church history for this term and have examined the fall of Rome and the preservation of the Church. We will also discuss the errors that start to creep into the church next week. Our memory work for this week is Colossians 3:1-2. Music: The music logs are due on Tuesday. Grade 8A From Mr. Isaac As noted in the last newsletter, the grade 8 students have completed their first reading of The Bronze Bow and are currently involved with a deeper study centered on the important elements of a work of fiction – context, structure and style. Having already completed a short look at the context of this story, we are currently in the midst of our examination of its structure. This week has been spent expanding our understanding of the setting of this story – its historical context and geographic setting. In science, we continue with our study of fluids with a particular focus on hydraulics. This week students have been introduced to Blaise Pascal, his principle of pressure (one of the laws of hydraulics), simple hydraulic systems, hydraulic multiplication and practical applications of hydraulics. We will continue with this study next week, looking at the contributions of another important Christian scientist, chemist Robert Boyle. Music: The music logs are due on Thursday. A number of these have not been submitted on time lately. Please ensure that your child completes the assignment on time. Grade 8B Music: The music logs are due on Thursday. A number of these have not been submitted on time lately. Please ensure that your child completes the assignment on time. Secondary News The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test will be administered, D.V., at Heritage on April 11, 2013. A preparation course addressing the content, methodology, and expectations of the OSSLT, will be delivered during lunch hours, 11:30 to 12:00, Tuesdays, March 26, and April 3. All Grade 10 students and others who must take the test this year are encouraged to attend. Please direct any questions to Mr. Stares. Miss Bergsma MCV4U Next week, we hope to finish up our chapter on curve sketching using derivatives with a test on Thursday. MBF3C We have a test scheduled for Tuesday to finish up our look at parabolas and quadratic relations. On Wednesday, we'll begin a new chapter on probability. Mr. Bosch Bible 9 Students are all busy with their ‘Toledoths of Genesis’ presentations. That will keep us busy for most of the week. Biology 11 This week we should finish the unit on Diversity of Life. We are all busy humanely collecting Arthropods and we also have a bacteria culture lab on the go. We are looking at a test by Friday… Chemistry 12 Should be facing a test by Thursday. We are then ready for percentage composition and concentrations of solutions. Mrs. Bouwers Art 9 We have begun learning about shape, form and space and have been working on making a "Flipbook" this week in class. Next week we will begin a studio project with popsicle sticks, Sketchbook #6, a drawing (and shading) of a pile of pillows will be due on March 27. Mr. Huizenga Biology 12 Thanks to Mrs. Tuinstra for accompanying us on our class trip to the winery. Our tour guide gave us a very informative glimpse of an industry that depends upon the process of fermentation. A test is planned for Tuesday next week. Chemistry 11 A test has been written today to take us to the end of our study of chemical reactions. Each student is also researching an application of chemical reactions for a short presentation which will begin next week. Mr. Isaac World Religions 11 As we near the end of our unit on animism, we are taking a close look ‘in our own backyard’ by looking at the animistic elements of First Nations spirituality. We will complete this subunit early next week before ending the unit with a comparison between animistic religions and biblical Christianity. Mulan/Brother Bear film reviews were due today. A unit review and test will be scheduled for the end of next (short) week. Physical Education 10 Despite having our first health unit on substance use and abuse split up with the March break, it appears that the grade 10 students have been able to jump back into this topic relatively easily. Having already studied what drugs are and how their physical and psychological effects on the body, we are currently delving deeper into studying substance use and abuse in the general youth population of Canada. By the end of this unit, students are expected to describe some important key factors that lead to substance dependence, describe the physiological and sociological effects of substance use, and show a knowledge of both the legal and spiritual aspects of substance use and abuse. We hope to wrap things up next week before beginning our next sports unit following the Easter break. Miss Kralt English 10P/D We are working through our Expository writing unit. Students should have handed in their first draft of the essay today. Monday they will need a new, clean copy of their essay for an in-class editing and revising lesson. The final draft should be ready to hand in on Wednesday. A test on the expository writing process will be given on Thursday. Art 10 We have started a brief art history unit on the art of the early Christian Church, Byzantine art, and Islamic art. The principle of art that we have been focussing on is balance. Students should have emailed their radial and symmetrical photography assignment today. Next week we will be working on a seven-circle or eight section kaleidoscope design as the next large studio project. Tuesday there will be a quiz on the art history material. The sketch book assignment will be due Wednesday. Art 11 We began our unit on art history by examining the Picasso’s painting ‘Guernica’ from the perspective of an art critic and then from the perspective of the art historian. I hope this will encourage students to take the time to learn about an artist and their work before making uneducated, uninformed judgements about the work. There will be a quiz on the art of the Renaissance on Tuesday. The sketch book assignment will be due for Wednesday. Art 12 Students should be working away at the six artworks needed for their exhibition. Students should also keep an eye out for suitable gallery exhibitions. Mr. Pols PPL40 Our badminton tournament begins this week. There will be a badminton rules test on Thursday, March 28th. CGW4U The class continues to look at the global issues of over population and hunger. There will be a quiz on this issue on Thursday, March 28. CGC1D The class has completed their island projects and now will begin to look at the eco-zones of the Canada and the rest of the world. Mr. Snippe Bible 10 We continue our study of the gospels. We are focussed more intently on the gospel of Matthew. Students are required to read the entire gospel of Matthew by Monday--this was assigned Thursday. Next week we will begin a group activity which culminates in a class presentation on the assigned portion of Matthew. Co-op This was one of only a couple full work weeks that we have had. Students were evaluated for the first time by their employer this week. Students were able to see how they were evaluated and discussed this with their employer. This evaluation allows for students to improve in areas that they may be lacking. Next week Wednesday is an in-class day. Students must bring to class a perfected resume, cover letter, and profile of their placement. Mr. Stares Biology 11 Some quality unit assignments were presented this week. We have had test 2.1 today and should be looking at another toward the end of next week. Daily review and homework completion is so important; please make sure your child is doing it. Math 9P/D Our third assignment is due in next Tuesday with our third test due to be written on Wednesday. Finding the roots of equations is a tricky concept, but can be accomplished with a bit of intuition and careful following of procedures. Encourage your child to seek help when problems arise. Math 10P/D Our third assignment is due in next Tuesday with our third test due to be written on Wednesday. We have spent a bit of time playing with polynomials and square roots. Students should be reviewing regularly and seeking help when it is needed. Miss teBokkel English 9 We wrapped our short story unit with a test this week and have been spending the rest of this week doing some work editing and writing paragraphs. We will be continuing with our paragraph work next week, but will also begin our unit on The Merchant of Venice. History 10 We have completed our unit on World War I with a test this week, and we are moving on to look at the Boom and Bust years of 19201929. Students will be introduced to the first half of the unit assignment in the near future--our 1920s Radio Show! Geography 9 We have finished our first unit this week. Unfortunately, we had to have a re-test as most students were not at all prepared for our first unit test. Students are reminded that it is their responsibility to continue to review ALL terms from the chapters we study in preparation for quizzes and tests. Please do check in with your son or daughter to make sure that they are spending enough time studying. Mr. Zylstra English 12U Next week Thursday we will be having our test on NeoClassical literature and the hymn writers. Students are encouraged to spend extra time preparing for the test as report cards are just around the corner. English 9 We are now working on our first Shakespearean play! Over the next two weeks we will be reading the play and answering short answer questions on what we have read. Students are encouraged to reread the materials over in the evenings because we typically will be having quizzes on what we have read. Speech Students should be planning their demonstration speeches during the next two weeks. We will be having two speeches: one where the speaker must involve the class in the demonstration and one where the presenter demonstrates a process to the group. In the past, students have benefited from additional preparation and practice at home.
