EDUCATIONAL FELLOW
JOB DESCRIPTION
Objectives
This is a one year post aimed at junior or middle grade paediatricians with an established interest in Medical Education. It will provide a positive step towards a career/special interest in Medical Education.
The primary objectives are:


Delivery of undergraduate medical student teaching
Research into undergraduate education in clinical settings, leading to publication/presentation of findings.

Development of teaching skills and completion of Certificate in Medical
Education

Clinical work to maintain skills and contribute to objectives above
The College of Medical and Dental Sciences
Educational Fellows may be required to spend a small proportion of their time engaging in educational activity at the College of Medical and Dental Sciences, such as providing support for some small group teaching sessions.
Educational Fellows will also be expected to share with the College educational research they engage in as part of their role or studies in medical education, perhaps through participation in events where they share their findings.
The Hospital
Birmingham Children’s Hospital is a major teaching centre, the regional referral hospital for the West Midlands and the local hospital for the children of south
Birmingham. All paediatric sub-specialities both medical and surgical are represented, some being designated supra-regional services.
On site is an excellent library and Education Centre. The Trust is fully committed to the education of its trainees and career grade staff.
Undergraduate Medical Education at the Hospital
Medical students attend The Children’s Hospital for 4 th and 5 th year ‘student selected activities’ attachments and their final year module in Paediatrics and Child Health.
Teaching is delivered through lectures, small group clinical and classroom teaching, and by involving students in the clinical work of the hospital. The Trust has developed a paediatric clinical skills teaching session for all final year medical students and the Trust organises and hosts these sessions eight times a year. The teaching fellows and SpR in Medical Education/Paediatrics are responsible for organising and teaching on the clinical skills teaching sessions.

Assessment is continuous and the Trust is one of three sites which host the final year objective structured clinical examination (OSCE) three times a year. The teaching fellows and SpR in Medical Education/Paediatrics play a major role in the organisation and running of these exams.
The Education Fellow posts are established to assist with the delivery of
Undergraduate teaching within this setting and also to look at ways of improving and developing teaching and learning in the Trust.
Medical educators in the trust have major interests in methods of mentoring, teaching and learning and assessment of clinical competence and are involved in research and development at local, regional and national levels.
Personal Development
This post would be particularly suitable for doctors studying for the MRCPCH Part 2 or who have passed the MRCPCH and are seeking entry to a specialty training programme in paediatrics.
The post holder will be supported in their personal development in research and education, and will be able to maintain clinical skills through attachment to appropriate departments. Links have been established with the Medical Education
Unit at the Medical School, and for educational research with the Postgraduate
Deanery.
The post holder will be supported to complete a Certificate in Medical Education, supervision for this will be provided by the Head of Academy/Clinical Sub Dean.
Job Plan
Upon appointment the post holder will agree a job plan with the Head of Academy which will reflect roughly
1/3 time teaching
1/3 time research
1/3 time clinical to support above
The post holder will be responsible to the Head of Academy/Clinical Sub Dean.
They will work closely with the undergraduate team within the Trust. In addition they will be accountable to consultants to whom they are attached for clinical work.

Responsibilities
Clinical
To provide service within a paediatric specialty(ies) appropriate to the post holder’s prior experience and future plans, to which undergraduate students are attached.
There is no on-call or out-of-hours commitment with this post.
Teaching
To deliver and develop clinical undergraduate medical student teaching at
Birmingham Children’s Hospital according to the requirements of University of
Birmingham Medical School.
Administration/Audit/Managerial
To liaise with the undergraduate administrative staff at the Trust and personnel at the
Medical School as appropriate. Contribute to the development of audit of teaching and learning at the Trust.
