Points to remember when writing your essay:








Don’t use the word “I”. When you get further up school, this won’t be
acceptable in essays therefore you should practice not writing it now.
Your essay will seem more sophisticated if you make a statement and
support it rather than writing things such as, ‘I think that this is a
very emotional play.’ Instead say, ‘This is a very emotional play as the
audience is compelled to experience a variety of feelings throughout.’
Use topic sentences at the beginning of each paragraph so the reader
knows what the paragraph will be about. These TOPIC sentences
should introduce the TOPIC of the paragraph.
Finish off each sentence with a concluding sentence. Do not just leave
your ideas hanging in the air as they will be lost. Refer back to your
topic sentence in order to do this.
Include quotes to support your ideas. EXPLAIN these quotes. Do not
simply write them and expect the reader to now why you have included
them in your essay.
In your conclusion, do not rate the text out of 10 or say you would
recommend it to anyone. This may be accepted in 1st and 2nd year but
not in Standard Grade. Comment in direct relation to the text and
follow the points in the plan.
Organise your ideas so your essay is easy to read, follow and
understand. You can do this by writing in paragraphs and dealing with
one idea at a time. For example if you are dealing with relationships,
focus on one at a time. Don’t write about all of them and then make
general statements.
Follow the plan and include everything it asks for.
Spell and punctuate everything correctly!
