The Lord of the Flies
The sow’s head and the conch shell each wield a certain
kind of power over the boys. In what ways do these objects’
powers differ? In what way is Lord of the Flies a novel
about power? About the power of symbols? About the power of
a person to use symbols to control a group?
The conch shell was an object that Ralph was using to
alert the other kids when they is moving along somewhere
else but when the other group out of nowhere came along
everything starts to change. The sow’s head is a pig’s head
that is chop off to represent a religion.
The difference between the Sow’s head and the conch
shell is that the conch shell makes noise and the noise
makes a hollowing noise. Piggy use the conch shell to get
the kids attention therefore he can get the names of the
kids that arrive or the new kids that arrive later.
Ralph is a leader because he is strong and he was hand
picked by the kids that is trap on the island with him.
Everyone wants to be leader and control the group like
Jake. Piggy is someone that is smart and he likes to
organize the group but no one will listen to him because he
is fat and don’t know what he is doing.
The kids chop the pigs head off to represent a
religion that’s going on. The religion is offered to anyone
with the likes of believing something.
What people don’t believe is that everyone on the
island is a symbol of something. Ralph likes to be leader
and jack likes to hunt anything that is in his path.
Lord of the flies was about the kids on the island for
power of leadership, just having power to control everyone
but when Ralph and jack split apart they have their own
group going on.” Jack’s in charge of the choir.”
Power is something is not easy to get when there is a
bunch of kids on the island all by there self. Some kids
have to vote or just pick a random person. When jack had
power he wanted to overrule Ralph to become the head of the
group tell everyone that Ralph should not be the leader
because he doesn’t know what he is doing.
When you have power nobody has the right to overturn
any decision you have made but the only decision someone
can make is by ruling over them.
Therefore when Ralph was hand picked to be leader
everyone was happy because he has the power to settle the
group in order. But when the group was all in order another
person came and his name was Jake. Jake was the other
leader on duty.
” All right who wants jack for chief?” jack called his
group hunters and he was named the chief of the choir
group. ”Hunters.”
