Million Word Challenge: Seven Hills Elementary
Dear Parent,
Every student at Seven Hills is challenged to read one million words during the school
year. There will be a Million Word Kick-off to build excitement and motivation for each
student to accomplish this task. For each student who reaches this goal, there will be a
celebration at the end of the school year. We encourage parents to participate with their
children by keeping track of the books you read together at home. Together, we can read
one million words!
Keeping Track of One Million Words – Grade Level Expectations
Kindergarten
The goal is for each kindergarten student to read 100 different books to equal about one
million words. The 100 books will come from books read aloud at school by their
classroom teacher. The teacher will write each title on a class chart so that together,
students can see the progress they are making as a class towards their goal of reading 100
books.
First Grade
The goal is for each first grade student to read 100 different book titles to equal about one
million words. When your child reads a book at home, please help them record it on the
reading log. The 100 books will come from a combination of books read at school and
home. The teacher will help each student keep track of the books they read at school as
parents help students keep track of the books read at home. Don’t forget to read
nonfiction also!
Second Grade
The goal is for each second grade student to read 100 different book titles to equal about
one million words. This equals to about one to two picture books or chapters from a
chapter book every day. When your child reads a book at home, please help them record
it on the reading log. The 100 books will come from a combination of books read at
school and home. The teacher will help each student keep track of the books they read at
school as parents help students keep track of the books read at home.
2 short picture books = 1 book
Don’t forget to read nonfiction also!
1 chapter book = 2 books
Third Grade
The goal is for each third grader to read 30 chapter books to equal about one million
words. When your child reads a book at home, please help them record it on the reading
log. The 30 chapter books will come from a combination of books read at school and
home. The teacher will help each student keep track of the books they read at school as
parents help students keep track of the books read at home.
The following will equal ONE 3rd grade chapter book:
3 picture books (on their reading level)
*Only 9 (27 picture books) of the 30 books can come from picture books. That means 21
of the books have to actually be chapter books.
Most nonfiction books are considered Chapter books
Fourth and Fifth Grades
The goal is for each fourth and fifth grader to read 25 chapter books to equal about one
million words. When your child reads a book at home, please help them record it on the
reading log. The 25 chapter books will come from a combination of books read at school
and home. The teacher will help each student keep track of the books they read at school
as parents help students keep track of the books read at home.
4th Grade:
The following will equal ONE 4th grade chapter book:
4 picture books (can only be counted if on their reading level)
4 magazines
*Only 4 (16 picture books or magazines) of the above of the 25 chapter book can come
from picture books or magazines
Most nonfiction books are considered Chapter books.
5th Grade:
The following will equal ONE 5th grade chapter book:
5 picture books (can only be counted if on their reading level)
4 magazines
*Only 2 (10 picture books or magazines) of the 25 chapter books can come from picture
books.
Most nonfiction books are considered Chapter books.
All books are at the teacher’s discretion after the student has discussed the book
with the teacher. Teachers will discuss reading levels with students, so they
understand their reading level.
Thank you for helping your child strive for the GOAL
of reading one million words! Feel free to join Seven
Hills’ students and staff in this worthy effort!
