Million Word Challenge: Lakeview Elementary Dear Parent, Every student at Lakeview Elementary is challenged to read one million words during the school year. There will be a Million Word Kick-off to build excitement and motivation for each student to accomplish this task. For each student who reaches this goal, there will be a celebration at the end of the school year. We encourage parents to participate with their children by keeping track of the books you read together at home. Together, we can read one million words! Keeping Track of One Million Words – Grade Level Expectations Kindergarten The goal is for each kindergarten student to read 100 different books to equal about one million words. The 100 books will come from books read aloud at school by their classroom teacher. The teacher will write each title on a class chart so that together, students can see the progress they are making as a class towards their goal of reading 100 books. We still want our Kindergarten students to track and log their reading each and every night. First Grade The goal is for each first grade student to read 100 different book titles to equal about one million words. When your child reads a book at home, please help them record it on the reading log. The 100 books will come from a combination of books read at school and home. The teacher will help each student keep track of the books they read at school as parents help students keep track of the books read at home. Don’t forget to read nonfiction also!
