The Mental Health Committee Presents the Family to Family program that will be offered at our church! This is a
free and very helpful program which educates families about mental illness. Class will start on January 29. Please

January 31st - The Roumeli Society of the Bay Area is once again hosting its annual Dinner Dance at Ascension
Cathedral. Hors d'oeuvres will be served at 6:00 pm, followed by dinner at 7:30 pm. For more information or to

February 5th - It is hoped that His Eminence, Metropolitan Tarasios of Buenos Aires will visit Ascension
Cathedral on Thursday, February 5th at 7 pm. He will share with us his experiences of the Orthodox Church in South
America and his reflections on the important missionary work of the Church that is taking place. Please plan to
attend this engaging and inspiring event sponsored by the Ascension Ladies' Philoptochos.
February 7th - Come and celebrate a wonderful evening of delicious food and dancing! The Navarino Messinian
Society San Francisco Bay Area presents an Apokratiko Glendi Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 7, 2009 at
Ascension Cathedral. Reception Hour will begin at 6:30pm followed by dinner 7:30 pm. Music by “Kymata Band”

February 8, 2009 Live, Love and Lead Others to Christ; Godparent's Sunday and Seventh Grade Dedication:
Godparent's Sunday is a special day we set aside each year to recognize and honor those who have made a
commitment to live, love and lead others in an Orthodox life of Christ. The Ascension Cathedral Sunday School
teachers and students invite you to share in the celebration by worshipping and taking communion with your
Godchildren. There will be one combined Divine Liturgy beginning at 10 am in the Cathedral which will include a
special dedication to the Lord by our seventh grade students and their Godparents. NEW this year! Enjoy a
scrumptious pancake breakfast (along with fresh scrambled eggs, ham and country-style potatoes) following the
Divine Liturgy with your Godchild. Tickets are affordably priced at: $15 adults, $10 children (ages 6-17), children 5
and under are free. Last year's event was almost sold out, so be sure to get your reservations in early! Contact Renee

CRAB AHOY!
For all the crab lovers out there, it's time to find your special crab-crackin' tools. The Ascension
Liturgical Choir's 29th Annual Crabfeed takes place on Saturday, February 14, 2009. Doors open at 6pm
allowing you to enjoy complimentary hors d'oeuvres while chatting with your friends and fellow
parishioners before dinner. Family style dinner service of salad, pasta, garlic bread and crab will start at
approximately 7:00 p.m.
Each table is provided with a bottle of white wine and a bottle of red wine to share. Soft drinks, beer and wine will
be available for purchase. Prices this year are the same as 2008: $40 per adult and $20 for children under 12. Seating
is at tables of 10 with a few tables that will seat 12 available upon request. For reservations please contact Kathleen
DiGiovanni at 510-654-5266 after 6:00 p.m. on weekdays or leave a message with your call back number. A flier was
sent out with one of the year end parish mailings and copies will also be available in the Narthex of the Cathedral.
February 28th - The Arcadians of Oakland invite you to its Annual Macaronada and Apokriatiko Glendi that will
take place on Saturday, February 28th in the Paris Community Center at Ascension Cathedral. A reception will begin
at 5:30 pm, followed by dinner at 7:30 pm. Dancing to the music of the Mythos Band will begin at 9:30 pm. Adults"

Job Opening: Modern Greek Studies Instructor
Applications are being accepted for an instructor's position in Modern Greek Studies for the Fall 2009 or Spring
2010. We are seeking doctoral candidates or holders of a PhD who specialize in the teaching of Modern Greek
language, literature and/or history (post-1453) to teach at least one course in these aforementioned areas in the
Modern Greek Studies Program at San Francisco State University.
Degree requirements include an MA, ABD status or a PhD in Modern Greek Literature, Comparative Literature,
Linguistics, ESL or Foreign-Language Pedagogy, Modern Greek History (post-1453), and/or Cultural Studies. All
San Francisco State University employees must demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States. Please send a
