Job Title Department Location Grade Line Manager (Job Title) AHDB JOB DESCRIPTION Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs (ZNCPig) Manager BPEX Stoneleigh Veterinary Programme Manager MAIN PURPOSE OF THE DEPARTMENT AND JOB Within the veterinary department the role of Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs (ZNCPig) Manager will be to support the Veterinary Programme Manager in the efficient delivery of national Salmonella control programme and plans of action to reduce zoonoses levels and improve the health status on pig farms. The post will be 40% office based at Stoneleigh and 60% field based knowledge transfer to processors, farmers and vets. The vision for the Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs (ZNCPig) is to improve the Salmonella status of the national pig herd and thereby to meet EU targets for Salmonella reduction, support production of a quality product, improve pig performance and icrease the sustainability of the industry. The Salmonella status of the British pig herd is significantly above the European average and any EU target is likely to be challenging for the industry to achieve. Action to improve Salmonella status should seek every opportunity to achieve concurrent improvements in productivity, environmental sustainability and cost of production. The key objectives for the BPEX KTR&D department is to see significant advances in: Improved Production Efficiency through knowledge transfer addressing best practice, demonstration, innovation and training. Better Health and Welfare via a programme of health improvement strategies and projects leading ultimately to disease eradication. Reduced environmental footprint of the pig industry addressing legislative compliance and use of better production techniques. Increased levels of food safety and product quality. The post reports to the Veterinary Programme Manager Budgetary responsibility: Delivery of Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs within budgets WORKING RELATIONSHIPS/MAIN CONTACTS/CONTEXT The post is expected to be 40% office based at Stoneleigh and 60% field based knowledge transfer to processors, farmers and vets. Close liaision with these groups is anticipated. Close liaison is required with the internal KT R&D department within BPEX. Knowledge Transfer team of 6 Veterinary team of 3 Environment team of 2 Proactive discussions with other internal teams: AHDB’s other KT and R&D teams Additionally the post holder will be expected to be in regular contact with external groups including: Contractors delivering the BPEX Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in pigs, which the post holder will manage and be directly responsible for both budget control and technical delivery Abattoirs Veterinary practices VLA BPEX levy payers KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Managing delivery of Zoonoses National Control Programme for Salmonella in Pigs (ZNCPig) Administration of the ZNCPig programmes eg Develop forms, paperwork, and certificates required; manage databases; manage communication strategy . Review of Salmnella control plans on farm and in abattoir with follow-up action as required to implement best practice nationally Managing delivery of ZNCPig field trials on Salmonella control on-farm and in abattoir Management of the ZNCPig database, reporting and information exchange Attendance of project steering groups, follow up of action points to ensure they are delivered in a timely fashion. Managing development and delivery of training materials for ZNCPig Support to the Veterinary Programme Manager in developing, planning and delivering the annual and longer term veterinary programme. The post holder will also be expected to carry out any other responsibilities commensurate with the post that the Line Manager/Chief Executive may require 2 KNOWLEDGE / EXPERTISE / MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Short listed candidates are likely to have: A degree in animal science, business studies or equivalent, or equivalent expertise in project management or of pig farm management Administration skills Information technology skills A knowledge of the pig sector Post holder would be supported for continuing further education.
