The problem the video talks about refers the communication between
British and Ireland, in the XIX century. It was interrupted by the Menai
Strait at Wales. It also explains that Thomas Telford was the one asked to
solve it. He had the reputation of one of the finest civil engineers to be
given the job. Tomas’ first idea was to build an arch bridge. But it did not
work, because building and ach bridge meant to use scaffoldings and these
would block the movement of ships along the busy waterway. So, Telford
decided to study how the construction of rudimentary bridges was: the use
of “strings” and “anchors” with a “wood floor” to go through. And thus, he
built the current bridge based in ancient techniques. From these principles,
Thomas Telford constructed a suspension bridge, modern for the time; with
a system designed to give more support to the entire structure, securing the
anchors underground and adding towers at the extremes. He achieved to
reduce the journey time from London to Dublin by nine hours.
