Descendants of Presumed Progenitors Thomas and Catherine Payton The names of Thomas and Catherine and a sibling relationship between Patrick, James, and Margaret are assumed from the naming conventions the three used for their children (and from the three having settled simultaneously, next door to each other, in Downie in the 1830’s). Patrick and James named their first sons Thomas, and Margaret named her second son Thomas. Patrick’s first daughter, James’s third daughter, and Margaret’s second daughter were named Catherine. The three Payton siblings emigrated from Ireland to Downie Twp, Perth Co, Ontario in about 1834. They are of interest to us because each married a Herron: James married Bridget Walsh, believed to be a daughter of Margaret Herron; Margaret married William Herron, one of the five Herron siblings; and Patrick’s second wife was Richard Herron’s widow, Mary Henneberry. James and Margaret moved on to Iowa, while Patrick remained in Downie. Patrick Payton b. ca. 1805 Kilglass, Co. Roscommon, Ireland (50/56/60/76/82 at death), d. 24 Oct 1882 Downie, bur.
