Purpose
People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe
selection procedures, and select horses for use by Riding for
the Disabled (RDA); train horses for RDA use; and manage
stress in horses during RDA sessions, and monitor for
suitability.

Demonstration of competency must comply with the policy and procedures in the
latest versions of NZRDA Resource Manual - Policies, Procedures and Standards for
Groups 2009; and NZRDA Health and Safety Manual (including Operational
Certificate), both of which are available from New Zealand Riding for the Disabled
Association Inc., by email admin@rda.org.nz or from PO Box 58-110, Whitby, Porirua

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Describe selection procedures, and select horses for use by RDA.
Evidence requirements
1.1
Description identifies advantages and disadvantages for selecting horse from
various sources.
Range
1.2
must include at least two advantages and two disadvantages for
each of the following sources – donated, purchased, hired and/or
loaned by commercial riding schools, hired and/or loaned by
private owners.
Description identifies criteria for selecting horses with desirable attributes in
accordance with RDA policy and procedures.
Range
size, temperament, sex, age, soundness, type of activity.
1.3
Description identifies criteria for selecting horses with desirable conformation
and movement in accordance with RDA policy and procedures.
1.4
Selection process is documented in accordance with RDA policy and
procedures.
1.5
Horses selected meet the requirements of RDA, and selection is in accordance
with RDA policy and procedures.
Range
evidence is required for at least three horses.
Outcome 2
Train horses for RDA use.
Range
evidence for training at least three horses.
Evidence requirements
2.1
Training accustoms the horses to situations they are likely to encounter during
RDA sessions and is in accordance with RDA policy and procedures.
Range
presence of helpers; games and associated equipment; standing
square when mounted and dismounted; equipment used for
mounting and dismounting; leading at walk, trot, and canter;
responsiveness to voice, body contact, noise; use of wheel chairs
and personal equipment.

Training activities maintain the horses’ interest in accordance with RDA policy
and procedures.

Manage stress in horses during RDA sessions, and monitor for suitability.
Evidence requirements
3.1
Situations and conditions causing stress in the horses are recognised, and
actions are taken to alleviate and/or remove stress in accordance with RDA
policy and procedures.
3.2
Horses are monitored for safety and suitability for RDA use, and action is taken
for any horses that are unsafe and/or no longer suitable and/or useful, in
accordance with RDA policy and procedures.
