JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Title:
Medical Assistant*
Status:
Full Time 40.0 Hours per week
Part Time 32 Hours per week
PRN – Less than 20 Hours per week
Position Purpose: Under general supervision, assists the nurses, nurse practitioners and physicians in
seeing patients. Responsible for the charts, encounter forms and patient correspondence.
Essential Duties:

Prepares patients for examination: Greets patients; reviews symptoms, treatment, and
past health/medical history; takes B/P, weight, height, temperature, and other
measurements such as peak flow and/or vitals as appropriate to complete health
assessment in clinical area; performs vision, hearing screenings and spirometry if
appropriate; obtains blood, urine, and sputum specimens as appropriate; and assists with
laboratory requisitions and assures lab pick-up.

Assists with patient scheduling and encounter forms.

Answers and triages telephone calls and callbacks as instructed by registered nurse, nurse
practitioner and/or physician.

Cleans and stocks examination rooms and maintains room cleaning schedule.

Responsible for set-up, assisting and post-cleaning for special procedures such as
culposcopy, endometrial biopsy, sigmoidoscopy, aspirations, wart removal, etc.

Maintains clinical records and logs for clinical area.

Responsible for ordering, maintaining, and inventory of medical, office, and laboratory
supplies for clinical area.

Files charts, lab reports, patient forms and information in the medical records.

Requests medical records from other health care providers.

Assists with chart flow/medical records in Riggs CHC and for other providers.

Assists with indigent medication assistance program.

Assists with the planning and implementation of programs for patients and families to
increase awareness of relevant medical conditions, decrease risk-behaviors, and increase
responsibility for self-care.

Attends and participates in in-service education for staff, quality assurance program, and
risk-management programs.

Relieves and substitutes for other medical assistants in other clinical areas as needed for
clinic operations and/or other clerical staff as needed.

Performs other duties as assigned.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS
Education & Qualifications:

High School Diploma

Graduate of an accredited program for Medical Assistants.

CMA certification preferred.

Current CPR certification.

One-year experience as a Medical Assistant preferred.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Organizational skills are essential

Computer literate

Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
Knowledge of:




Knowledge of medical office practices, procedures and equipment.
Knowledge of problem-oriented record keeping
Correct English usage, spelling and grammar.
Community resources.




Deals with public and staff, both in person and over the telephone, in tactful and
professional manner.


Understands Riggs CHC relationship with the community and maintains positive image
and relationships.

Plans and coordinates patient care with the health care providers based on clinic needs.

Identifies patient problems, deviations from normal, and reports changes to health care
providers.

Keeps medical records up to date.

Identifies unsafe patient environment and discusses situations with the Medical Director
and Nurse Practitioners.

Maintains open communications with the Medical Director, Nurse Practitioners, and
other staff.

Coordinates clinic patient flow for efficiency of providers giving care.

Interprets Riggs CHC services and policies to patients and families.

Regularly meets with Medical Director, Nurse Practitioner(s) to identify clinical
problems and helps initiate appropriate solutions.

Works independently in the absence of supervision.

Self-motivated and flexible to daily schedules and/or needs.
Personal Work Relationships:

Works daily with staff and public for the purpose of giving and receiving factual
information with other Riggs CHC staff.

Follows Riggs CHC policies and procedures.

Maintains strict Riggs CHC confidentiality.

Flexibility and adaptability is required.

Plans own work that is accomplished in time allocated.

Willing to ask for assistance when needed.

Functions as an advocate for patient and their families.

Accepts and institutes change.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Work may require long and irregular hours, and under pressure conditions.

May be exposed to communicable diseases.

Work is performed indoors in a heated and air conditioned office setting

Center may be crowded and noisy at times.

Usual clinic functions, which may require physical tasks such as: frequent lifting
materials and/or patients up to 20 pounds and up to 50 pounds infrequently

Requires standing and/or walking for long hours.

Requires ability to distinguish between letters, numbers and symbols.

Requires a normal range of vision.

Some stress resulting from diversity and intensity of patient and their care.

Requires awareness of personal limitations and flexibility.

Risk level 1, may include some exposure to hazardous materials.
