Press Release Belmar, NJ Media Contact: Colleen Connolly 609-273-4182 BELMAR TO AWARD BOARDWALK RECONSTRUCTION CONTRACT DATE: December 12, 2012 BELMAR: Today Mayor Matthew J. Doherty announced that the Belmar Boardwalk Reconstruction project bids were opened and the lowest bidder is Epic Construction from Piscataway, New Jersey. The contract award will advance for Borough Council approval at tonight’s Council Meeting. Belmar’s aggressive approach to reconstructing the boardwalk, decimated by Hurricane Sandy, led to a robust bidding process with 23 bids opened on Tuesday, December 11, 2012. The bids ranged from Epic Construction’s low bid of $6.6 Million to the highest bid of 19.6 Million. The full list of responding construction firms and their bids are available at www.belmar.com. “This is another important step in rebuilding our boardwalk in time for this summer. Belmar has had a boardwalk every summer since 1875, and we are committed to having one ready for 2013 as well. Our determination to rebuild quickly has resulted in a robust and fair bidding process that yielded a great price for reconstruction, far below our original estimate of $17 million,” said Mayor Matthew J. Doherty. He continued, "By being aggressive, we were able to ensure residents and tourists that Belmar will have a boardwalk this summer, and we will build it at the best price possible for taxpayers. In addition, the boardwalk is engineered to 2012 standards that would have survived Sandy. So not only are we doing this quickly and at a great price, we are also building it to last." Mayor Doherty also credits Governor Chris Christie, he stated, "Governor Christie has been supportive of our recovery and rebuilding efforts since Sandy devastated our community. His leadership and support will make it possible for our town, and the rest of the Jersey Shore, to come back and be ready for this summer." The winning bidder, Epic Construction, is a well respected 40 year old company with their headquarters in Piscataway, NJ. Recently completed projects include the Rutgers University Stadium Expansion and the Union City High School. Epic has extensive experience in public recreation and sport projects.
