Fall Celebrations

Our Fall Parties and Parade will take place on Friday, October 30 from 2:15 – 3 p.m. PreK will have their parties on Thursday, October 29. Guidelines for food and costumes are included in this month’s newsletter.

Parents are welcome to attend. All visitors attending will be directed to sign in and receive a name badge.

Valuables

Valuables are any item that would cause concern if lost or stolen. The school administrators and staff cannot be responsible for valuables that students bring to school. Students should leave all valuables at home. In general, students should not bring toys, music players, electronic devices, collectable cards or unusual items to school unless they are intended for a specific purpose in the classroom. When unauthorized items are brought to school, parents may be asked to come pick them up. Please refer to page 19 of the parent handbook sent home in

August. Your cooperation is appreciated.

Free and Reduced Lunch

If you feel you may qualify for free lunch and breakfast, please contact the school. We can help you get the information needed to apply.

Partners In Education

Partners in Education:

On September 22nd, students at Brookhaven Elementary participated in the annual fundraiser entitled, The Heart

Festival, sponsored by one of our Partners in Education, Mon Health Systems. All the proceeds were given to the American Heart

Association. Students donated quarters to get their hearts and blood pumping at several different physical activity stations. Through all this heart-healthy activity, the students and families at Brookhaven Elementary raised $820 to go back to the American Heart

Association!

Look for other school events and projects in the future to benefit Kelsie's Korner, which was established in Mon General’s Pediatric

Ward in 2007. When a small patient visits the Pediatric Ward, the child may pick a toy, a book, or art supplies to keep from "The

Korner". The Kelsie's Korner project was named in remembrance of a former Brookhaven student. It was in her spirit that the project began in hopes of making hospital experiences less frightening for small children. Mon General and Brookhaven

Elementary continue to foster a positive relationship.

Remember that every 2nd Wednesday of the month, one of our other Partners in Education, BB & T will be at the school to help children get the information they need to open a savings account. If your child does not already have a bank account and would like one, please call the school for an enrollment form. You may also contact the Sabraton branch of BB & T directly to ask about opening an account for your child at 304-292-1000.

Brookhaven's Teaching Garden:

Greetings from the garden! Please join us for a garden volunteer meeting on Thursday, October 8th, "garden-side" at

6pm. All are welcome to come to find out how you can get involved and help with current and future garden plans.

Fall plans include the construction of one or two low tunnels to experiment with extending our fall season, organizing our newly constructed shed, detangling our raspberry patch, prepping our other beds for winter, and organizing a recurring monthly meeting. We are very excited to have anyone interested in helping with Brookhaven's garden.

CLASSROOM NEWS AND INFORMATION

PRE-K NEWS!

Pre-K had a parent meeting on September 22nd. We look forward to seeing more families participate in future meetings. Gabrielle Votta provides valuable information to families and teachers provide classroom updates.

Notices will come regarding our next parent meeting. The children enjoyed a visit from Buster Bus on

9/22/15-they seemed to enjoy the presentation and learned a lot about school bus safety. We were so pleased with the great response to the Grandparent event we held on 9/24/15-the children loved performing for their grandparents and sharing a small snack together in our outdoor pavilion. Pre-K classes will be attending the

Fire Safety Program on October 6th. The annual program is held at UHS-this trip is only for students due to space availability. Pre-K conferences will be October 6th and November 19th from 4-7PM. Please contact your child's teacher to schedule. Classroom fall parties will be on October 29th at 2:15. Families are welcome to attend-homeroom parents will be contacting others in order to coordinate activities and discuss items needed!

Thank you! The PreK Staff

KINDERGARTEN NEWS!

October is a busy month for Kindergarten as we learn about fire safety and make our annual walking trip to our own Brookhaven Volunteer Fire Department. We thank these men and women for volunteering their time to keep our Community safe! We continue to write our names being sure that we begin with a capital letter followed by lower case letters. This is a fun activity to practice at home with pens and paper, markers and paper, and even sidewalk chalk on the driveway! Identifying both uppercase and lowercase letters is very important…look at signs as you travel, say the letter and the sound the letter makes…riding along can be fun!

Numbers are important, too. Counting beyond 20 and counting backward from 10 and 20 is another fun task to practice!

Mrs. Brehm, Mrs. Cline, Mrs. Chuby, & Mrs. Holbert

FIRST GRADE NEWS!

Hello at home to all our first grade families! We have had a great start to our year. We are excited to have a new reading program. The students have been working hard on different reading skills. Here are some skills to work with your child at home this month:

1. Sequencing : make sure your child can tell you what happened first, what happened after a certain event and so on.

2. Nonfiction or fiction: have your child tell you if the story is fiction or nonfiction and why?

3. Blending sounds to read an unknown word.

We are starting to work on adding numbers in first grade. We've been working on making sure students can write and recognize numbers from 1 to 120. You can start working on addition facts at home.

Thanks for all you do!

Sincerely,

First Grade Team : Mrs. Chambers, Mrs. Elkins, Mrs. Moats, and Mrs. Richie

Halloween treats for the students outstanding performances.

Please watch for the weekly Refrigerator Homework. Students will continue to practice their math facts to sums of 18. Math Homework assignments will be written in the agenda. Please encourage your child to read nightly and sign your child’s agenda nightly.

Thank you!

The Second Grade Team

THIRD GRADE NEWS!

Math – Children have been working on place value, time (elapsed time) and money (making change.)

Reading – Children should be reading at home. They are assigned a reading story weekly. However, this does not limit them to other reading materials. Ask your child how many Reading Counts points they have earned. In order to make the

December bowling trip, they will need 50 points.

Spelling – Study weekly words.

Writing – Children are working on paragraphs and descriptive writing.

Language – Subjects, predicates and parts of speech.

Science—Eco-systems and Animal Habitats

Some books for recommended reading are: Who Stole the Wizard of Oz, The Computer Nut, Henry Huggins and Cupid

Doesn’t Flip Hamburgers.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS!

The fourth grade teachers and students are very excited about our new “Math Walk to Intervention.” This is a

30 minute time period within our Math Block where students travel to different classrooms to receive math instruction. We have been working on multi-digit addition and subtraction, and will move on to rounding multi-digit whole numbers soon.

Social Studies classes have been learning about economics by studying the Great Depression and President

Roosevelt’s “New Deal.” In Science, the process of photosynthesis has proved to be an interesting topic of discussion.

We hope the students are continuing to practice fact fluency on Moby Max. Some students have already mastered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division basic facts! In Reading Counts, we continue to work towards the Bowling Trip. Sixty points are required and some have already met that goal. Our goal, as teachers, is to foster a lifetime love of reading

Thank you – Mrs. Delawder, Mrs. Robinson, and Mrs. Cox

CLASSROOM NEWS AND INFORMATION

FIFTH GRADE NEWS!

Fifth Graders have adjusted well into their classrooms and daily routines. They have been working hard and we have been very busy!

Mrs. Kelly’s math classes have been hard at work reinforcing basic math skills in all areas. We would like to congratulate our “Math Maniacs”! These students have mastered their multiplication fast facts and are fluent with their multiplication. We are encouraging others to continue to work hard and earn their “Maniac Degree”!

Mrs. Slavey’s social studies classes have been busy learning about maps. Next, students will be learning about westward expansion and the growth of the United States.

Mrs. Gore’s science classes have just finished up learning about cells, bacteria, and the six kingdoms of life. Students have investigated many different samples using microscopes and everyone investigated the microscopic organisms found in a drop of pond water. In order to wrap up this unit, all students were asked to create a 3-dimensial animal cell model. These projects are amazing!

Finally, the reading/language arts classes have been studying story elements, theme, and genres. We have also been comparing and contrasting stories and are working on citing accurately from sources.

We are off to a great start. We appreciate all of your support and look forward to a great year!

“If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself.”~ Henry Ford
