party guidelines sent home earlier this year. Each grade level has a parent assigned to organize their party.
PreK teachers will send home information for their parties. For grades K – 5, parties will begin at 2:15 and
conclude by 3:00. We will begin signing parents in around 2:00.
CLASSROOM NEWS AND INFORMATION
PRE-K NEWS!
Prek will be having their Valentine's Party on Thursday February 11 at 2:15. We welcome parents to join us!
We are also starting to schedule field trips for the Spring Time!
During snow days we encourage you to work with your child at home on their letters, letter sounds, numbers
and writing their name.
Pre-K Team
KINDERGARTEN NEWS!
The Kindergarten Team is very proud of the progress their children have made so far this year. Classroom
performance, report cards, and DIBEL's scores all show evidence of progress!
During the month of February the kindergarten classes will be celebrating Groundhog Day, The 100th Day of
Kindergarten, Valentine's Day, and President's Day. It is important for the children to participate in lessons on
predicting, recognizing numbers/counting to 100, friendship, and honoring the past and present leaders of our
great nation.
The Kindergarten Team would like to thank all of our parents for your support and teamwork in making your
children's Kindergarten experience the best that it can be!

FIRST GRADE NEWS!
Happy February!
Time is flying by and we are celebrating the 100th day of school and Valentine's Day this month! Look for a
note in the folders about our celebrations. Don't forget to keep your student reading 4 to 5 times a week at
home. This builds up their fluency. More practice = better readers!
We are working hard in addition fluency in math and connecting subtraction to their addition facts. Example
: if I know 6+4 = 10 ; I can figure out 10-4= 6.
Finally please make sure your child is dressed for the weather. When the snow melts and the temperature is
above 32 degrees, we will be outside enjoying the fresh air again! Finally, tennis shoes are best for schoolespecially on PE days.
Thanks for all you do !
The first grade team,
Ms. Elkins, Ms. Chambers, Mrs. Moats, Mrs. Richie, and Mrs. Unger
CLASSROOM NEWS AND INFORMATION
SECOND GRADE NEWS!

February is Dental Health Month. We will be celebrating by having a dental health speaker from WVU.
The children will receive a bag of dental health supplies. The children have a new reading book. It is
very important that they have their reading book every day in class and remember to watch for the
Refrigerator Letter for weekly assignments. We have started working on lower-case cursive letters and
the children are doing a great job! Please practice the letters we have learned at home. IMPORTANT,
your child needs a new set of Reading Counts points (40), to go on the next bowling trip. Encourage your
child to read and take tests at school. The next bowling trip will be in May. During snow days, continue
reading stories, study your spelling words and memorize math facts.
THIRD GRADE NEWS!
Third Grade Newsletter – February
Classrooms are in need of LEAD PENCILS and/or DRY ERASE MARKERS. Many children are coming into
class without pencils. If you would like to donate pencils or dry erase markers, it would be greatly appreciated.
Continue to practice the multiplication facts.
Let us give some examples of how to practice:
1. Practice in the car while driving to your child’s extracurricular activities.
2. During commercials of their favorite TV shows.
3. Standing in line at the grocery store.
4. Waiting for dinner at the restaurant.
There are only a small number of children who know their facts by memory. Memorizing multiplication facts is
essential for success in Math.
Please put Brookhaven home page as a favorite on your home computer. Children can access many of the
websites we use from here.

FOURTH GRADE NEWS!
In Math, fourth graders continue to work on long division. In Math Intervention, we are concentrating on
factors and multiples. Soon, we will be moving on to fractions. If your child has not mastered the basic facts
for all four operations, please have them continue to practice every night for fast recall. Moby Max is a great
resource to use in order to accomplish this goal. Flash cards are also effective.
In Social Studies, we are studying the global economy and how it affects our daily lives. Also, we have learned
how our choices are shaped by our wants and needs. We are learning how supply and demand have an impact
on pricing. We have discussed how entrepreneurs take risks when starting new businesses.
In Science, we are learning about food chains and webs. Personal narratives have been the focus in Writing
Process. Martin Luther King Day has provided us with the opportunity to understand how one person can have
a huge impact. We stressed that all his achievements in the area of civil rights were accomplished by peaceful
means.
FIFTH GRADE NEWS!
Fifth Grade News
The County Spelling Bee will be held March 1, 2016 at the Mylan Park Event Center. In the event of
inclement weather, the spelling bee will be held at a later date. We would like to once again congratulate
Darby Shaub and Macy Muckelroy. They will represent Brookhaven at this year’s spelling bee.
Congratulations to Katie Spohn as well. She will act as our alternate.
Please remember to send your child to school prepared for class and in appropriate clothes for the chilly
weather. Math Journal pages should be completed for each missed day of school. The assigned pages are
to be turned in to your child’s teacher the next school day.
“Ballroom Bulls” will begin January 26th. Our students are very excited to begin this program and we
are very thankful for the opportunity to participate in it! This program uses ballroom dancing techniques
to help teach manners, etiquette, and other lifelong skills. This is a 10 week program that will end with
the children participating in a Dance Extravaganza event sometime in early April.
During a snow day, your child can utilize the websites located under the “students” tab on the
Brookhaven home web page.
