Role Play Resource
Setting up your Role Play Area
Topic: Talking Tudors Role Play Area: Tudor Fort – Henry VIII
This topic is all about living in Tudor times.
The children learn about Tudor buildings, punishments
and how the rich and poor people lived.
Creating a castle or Tudor fort will allow children to
develop their understanding of what daily life was like, and how it felt to
live in a castle, especially if you were rich! NEVER upset the King!
Inside:
 Make a chair look fit for a king! Cover it with rich coloured fabrics such
as velvet. Extend the back of the chair so it is tall and grand, decorating
it with priceless jewels!
 Provide dressing up clothes – cloaks/robes for the Kings men. A crown/hat
for the king.
 Jewellery – plastic or made from papier-mâché.
 A banqueting table with cups covered
in foil for goblets, trenchers (plates)
made from thick card (or clay).
 Arrange seats around the table for a banquet!
 Display a feast of foods on the table – made from papier-mâché,
foam/sponge, plastic play foods, plasticine/play dough.
 Display an old map (from Tudor times)
 Scrolls of paper for rules and punishments to be recorded.
 Display paintings/portraits of previous ancestors framed in gold gilt.
Outside:
 Paint sheets of card with brick-like/wood effect.
 Cut small slits for windows and squares
at the top for …..
 Make a draw bridge for the
grand entrance or large wooden
doors with heavy knockers

Top Tips
Some ideas to encourage Speaking and Listening
in your Role Play Area
Topic: Talking Tudors Role Play Area: Tudor Fort – Henry VIII
Discuss with your children the ‘people’ who may be involved in the ‘Tudor fort’
and what their roles may entail.
How many you choose will depend on the size of your role play area.
Display the Tudor maps and paintings of previous ancestors. Make them eye
catching with elaborate gold gilt frames so they encourage the children to ask
each other questions and invite dialogue. Have prepared some rules and
punishments on the scrolls – Make some dramatic!
Find me a
