Overview: This course will introduce students to computer hardware and software. Hardware
includes all internal parts, ports, printers, etc. Software includes Operating Systems, GUI s,
networking, Internet, word-processing, electronic spreadsheets, presentations. There is a great
number of terms in the books that you will need to know. Assignments, Syllabus, Important Dates
and all relevant class information will be posted in blackboard. http://blackboard.selu.edu/. The class
format will be as follows: Each week you will consist of reading assignments and/or a task based on
that reading assignment. I usually get the entire course populated very early in the semester so you
can work at your own pace. If you finish all the assignments and exams early, you are DONE….
Requirements: You must have access to the Internet to take this class. We will use SLU’s
Blackboard system. You must have access to Microsoft Office. (Word, Excel, Powerpoint). The
course is based on Windows XP and Office 2003. You must have an SLU Email account. All
correspondence will be by Email. You must use my SLU email address for all correspondence.

Books: Books are available for purchase from the bookstore. We will be using them. Both books are
published by Prentice Hall. If you have problems getting them from the bookstore, you can try to find
them from friends or ebay.
BOOK 1 – (Must Have) Evans, Alan, Kendall Martin, Mary Ann Poatsy, Technology in ActionComplete, 2/E, Prentice Hall - Pearson. ISBN: 0-13-1748-181
BOOK 2 – (Optional) Grauer, Robert T., Maryann Barber, Exploring Microsoft Office 2003 Enhanced
Edition, Prentice Hall - Pearson. ISBN: 0-13-1748-19X. You can learn most that you will need about
office products from the online help.
Assignments: There will be 10 assignments. All assignments will be posted by submitting it from the
assignment in blackboard. Make sure you save backup copies of assignments on another media.
Sometimes files get corrupted. If you submit an assignment and I do not receive it, I will ask you to
resubmit it so make SURE you have backup copies or your will have to complete it again.
Exams: There will be 3 Exams. There will be two Exams that will cover parts that we cover in the
Technology in Action Textbook and Microsoft Word. The third Exam with be Comprehensive Final
Exam that also covers Microsoft Powerpoint and Microsoft Excel. Each exam is valued at 100 points
each. The Final Exam is not weighted and counts as a regular exam. Test will be taken on
blackboard.
Grading Scale: Your final grade will be determined by dividing the total points that you have by the
total number of points possible and multiplying by 100. The grading scale will be a ten point scale as
follows:
90-100 - A 80-89 - B
70-79 - C
60-69 - D
0-59 - F
IMPORTANT DATES:
FRIDAY March 16th. Please drop the class by this date if you decide you are not going to complete
all the work required. This is the last day to Withdraw or Resign without grade penalty.
MONDAY May 14th. All rental textbooks are due. Last day to turn them in with a fine.
ALL ASSIGNMENTS MUST BE TURNED IN BY May 4th @ 10:00 PM.
ALL EXAMS MUST BE SUBMITTED BY May 8th @ 10:00 PM.
The Instructor reserves the right to make any changes deemed necessary concerning the
schedule of this class.
