While hiking on the south island of New Zealand you are in awe of the great glaciers that inhabit some of the island. Two particular glaciers that get your attentions are Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, located in Westland National Park on the west coast of the south island. Based on these two inspiring natural wonders you have become quite intrigued about glaciers and your trip has sparked your desire to become more of an “expert” on glaciers and glacial features. The Task 1. First you need to know the basics of glacial formation and movement. You are to write a 1 page (double-spaced, 12 point font) descriptive summary of how a glacier forms and moves. Diagrams with explanations are suggested to be used here, but will not account for the page of text. 2. Since you now want to travel to other exotic locations and hike glaciers you need to become familiar with the “lingo” and terms associated with glaciers. Below is a list of terms that you must define. Along with the definition you are to locate a descriptive picture that you may use as a reference when studying glaciers. Terms – Glacier Valley Glacier (Alpine Glacier) Continental Glacier (Ice Sheets) Ice Caps Crevasses Iceberg Moraine Arete U-Shaped Valley Hanging Valley Till Outwash Outwash Plains Eskers Moraine-dammed lake In order to accomplish your tasks you will be required to use a variety of selected websites that are listed below in "The Process Section". The Process 1. First you'll be assigned to a team of 2 students. You will be assessed on how well your final product is as a team. It is your individual duty to be sure that your partner as well as yourself are on task. 2. In order to accomplish the first task you are going to need to access the following websites to answer the question assigned in task one. You must apply information from all sites in your summary (remember to use your own words, plagiarism is a crime). http://wwwnsidc.colorado.edu/glaciers/story/grow.html (Hint- Check the General Info - Q&A section of the above site) http://www.fs.fed.us/r10/tongass/forest_facts/resourc es/geology/icefields.htm 3. Now that you have composed the summary of how a glacier forms and moves it is time to move on to vocabulary portion of the webquest. 4. Your task now is to define the list of terms that you saw above. 5. If possible small pictures of the terms are highly recommended. 6. In order to find your definitions and pictures you may use the sites that you used in task 1 or you may access the new sites listed below. ***Do not use the same site for every term, use a variety and be sure to read what you are typing.*** http://www.on.ec.gc.ca/greatlakeskids/GreatLakesMo vie5.html http://www.uvm.edu/whale/GlaciersGlacialAges.html http://www.ndsu.nodak.edu/nd_geology/nd_glacial/in dex_glacial.htm http://www.uwsp.edu/geo/faculty/lemke/alpine_glaci al_glossary/landforms/u_valley.html 7. Once you have finished both Task 1 and Task 2, be sure that both are assembled into one document, with names, date, and a title. Evaluation You and your partner will receive the same grade for your glacier project and will be awarded based in the following rubric.
