Glaciers – Chapter 8.2
pgs. 215-220
Learning Objectives:
- Explain how glaciers move
- Describe and identify evidence of glacial erosion and deposition
Glacier form when ___________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________________________________________.
How do they move?
• What makes glaciers unique is their ability to move…
• Due to their sheer mass, glaciers, under their own weight, flow down hill like
very slow rivers of snow….
Striations - ____________________________________________________________________________________

Different Kinds of Glaciers,,,,
a) Valley (Alpine) Glaciers - ___________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________
b) Continental Glaciers - _______________________________________________________________

Name __________________________________________________ Date_____________________________
Valley Glacier Features:
________________________ - eroded glacial valleys tend to be "U" shaped in cross section.
______________________– bowl shaped depression scooped out at the head of the glacier.
________________________ – 3 or more cirques eroding (attacking) one peak.
_____________________ - sharp ridge between 2 glacial valleys.
Continental Glacier Features:
____________________ - circular depressions made by large pieces of melting ice.
____________________ - mounds of sediment deposited along the front of a melting
glacier.
____________________ - long, winding ridge of material deposited by a stream below the
glacier.
Transported Material:
______________________- unsorted material carried with in the glacier produced by scour
and abrasion .
________________________- material carried along the sides of the glacier (valley walls).
________________________- when two glaciers valleys meet, it’s the material in the middle.
________________________- marks the end or furthest advance of the glacier.
________________________- sediments deposited by melt water at the end of a glacier.
________________________- large rocks carried, then deposited by the glacier.
