As scanned from The Jackson Times, Jackson, Breathitt Co., KY, May 20, 1999. (Posted as a courtesy to The Jackson Times. I have no further information.) Mickie, I'm Jim Riley, responding to your inquiry. I'm sending this from my home in Temuco, Chile, South America where my wife and I are missionaries. Gentleman John Riley was my great-great-great grandfather. His first wife was Sarah Johnston from whom I descend. She was from Virginia I believe. I think she and her parents are buried on the Johnson Cemetery at Buckhorn of Rt 28 "up the river." Gentleman John's second wife was Cythia Davidson. They too had children but I only know the girl's names: Polly Ann and Ella. Polly Ann married Ike McIntosh and Ella married John Gross. Both raised their families in Buckhorn and are buried on the Laurel Cemetery in Buckhorn. By his 1st wife, Sarah, Gentleman John had a son Elihu. Elihu married Maxiline Baker "Granny Mass" who was from the falls over in Owsley Co., Kentucky. Elihu and Max had several children: George, Granville, Orville (my great-grandfather), Rob, Saul and at least one daughter they called "Pop." The daughter was married and had a child and died tragically if I remember correctly. Anyway, Orville, my great-grandfather married Isabel Sandlin from Buckhorn and they had 12 children: Peter, Elizabeth, Zack, Rob, Julie, Jim, Mae (my grandmother), Eliza, Eugene, Elly, Dennis and Jeff. My grandmother was the last of them, she passed away May of last year at 91 yrs of age! She married Sim Eversole and they had 7 children, my mother Polly Marie being number 5. My dad is Monroe Riley who interestingly enough is the great-great grandson of Zack Riley who was an older brother of Gentleman John's. Going back to Elihu's kids: George married Sally Sandlin and I remember at least 2 of their children: William Riley and Jane Turner. Jane lives at Morris Fork, Kentucky. Saul married Elizbeth Morris, fondly know as Aunt Lizbeth. They had Rob, Mandy and some others who slip my mind. Mandy's in the nursing home at Booneville, Ky. She's the widow of Jerry Sandlin from Morris Fork. Sounds like your grandmother, Polly Riley was a first cousin to my grandmother, Mae Eversole. Your great-grandfather, Granville and my great-grandfather, Orville were brothers! Elihu is buried at Morris Fork, Granny Mass at the Falls in Owsley Co. Who was your great-grandmother, Granville's wife? Aren't most of Granville's children and descendents settled at Jackson? Best of luck in your search. Her maiden name was Juanita Smith born Long's Creek, Morris Fork, Breathitt County, KY. Hope this has been of some help. Please write and let me know where you fit in my Family Tree. Mary Dear Rosie, My name is Jim Riley and I am replying to you from Temuco, Chile, South America where my wife and I are missionaries. I'm from right over the line from Breathitt Co., Ky. My parents live just outside Buckhorn where I was raised. They are Polly Eversole Riley and Monroe Riley. Anyway, Gentleman John Riley was my great-great-great grandfather. Interestingly enough, on my mother's side, not my dad's! He was married twice, the first wife was a Johnston, Sarah I believe but I'm not 100% sure. She was from Virginia and her mother was a Pennington. She and her parents are buried on the Johnson Cemetery "down the river" at Buckhorn on the way to Hazard off Rt 28. Anyway, they had several children my great-great grandfather Elihu being on of them. He married Maxiline Baker from over in Owsley Co. Their son, Orville Baker Riley married Isabel Sandlin from Buckhorn. Their daughter, Mae married Sim Eversole from Buckhorn. My mother, Polly is Sim and Mae's daugther. My great-great grandfather, Elihu is buried at Morris Fork. He is the brother or uncle of your ancestor, Squire. After Gentleman John's first wife died, he married Cythia Davidson. They had 4 children. I can't remember the 2 boy's names but the girls where Ella and Polly Ann. Ella married John Gross and raised her family in Buckhorn. Polly Ann married Ike McIntosh and raised her family in Buckhorn also. Both women are buried on the Laurel Point Cemetery in Buckhorn. You need to contact Charles Riley. I believe he's the grandson of Squire Riley and the Sandlin. His father was Sammy Riley and Sammy was one of Squire's 24 children, the last 20 being by the Sandlin!!! I don't have his telephone -I'm aways away as I said- but he works at the Mount Carmel Christian School in Jackson or Vancleve, Ky. He's quite a geneologist and I'm sure he'd be glad to help you. Best of luck with your search! Regards, Jim Riley, Temuco, Chile
