Research Assistant – Bacteriology

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a 24 month fixed-term contract position as
a Research Assistant in Bacteriology, in the School of Medicine at National University of Ireland, Galway.
This position is funded by the funded by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the STRIVE
programme (2007-2013) and is concerned with improved monitoring of water supplies for verotoxigenic
E. coli (VTEC).
Job Description:
The purpose of the study is to evaluate whether current systems used for monitoring water supplies for
Cryptosporidium can be concurrently used for monitoring water supplies for other pathogenic organisms
such as verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC). The research project will involve development of a rapid method
for monitoring large water volumes for pathogenic contaminants. The successful candidate will work
within the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology Group of Professor Martin Cormican and Dr.
Dearbháile Morris.
Applicant’s Specifications:
Candidates must hold an MSc degree or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Microbiology or a
related discipline. Prior research experience in particular in the areas of water quality or molecular
biology is essential. Own transport required and full Irish/EU driving licence is essential as there will be a
requirement for some travel. Experience of working with pathogenic organisms, and an ability to work
autonomously would be desirable.

Salary: €21,865 - €35,214 per annum (public sector pay policy pertaining to new entrants will apply)
