Activity 1 Directions:
Read the following list of vocabulary words. When you are finished, create flash cards
for each vocabulary word, writing the word on the front of your index card and the
definition on the back.
Business: all of the activities of an individual or group of individuals involved in
producing and distributing goods and services to customers
Goods: Items or products that people may buy
Needs: necessary wants or things we must have to survive
Opportunity Cost: What you give up when you make one choice instead of another
Product: Something produced by human or mechanical effort or by a natural process
Resource: Anything that people can use or want to make or obtain what they need or
want
Service: Tasks that people or machines perform to satisfy wants

Activity 2 Directions:
If you own a business, your main goal is typically to make money so that you can stay in
business. In order to make money, it is important for the business owner to understand
the interests and values of his/her potential customers. If you were an owner of a local
restaurant, brainstorm at least five things you would want to know about your customer
to make sure that your business stays in business. Type your items in Microsoft Word,
centering vertically and horizontally in landscape orientation, following proper centering
rules. Save as Activity 2 in your Business and You folder.

Activity 3 Directions:
List five businesses you are familiar with in your community. Identify whether the
businesses provides goods or services or both. Give an example of the product and/or
service sold through the business.

Part IV: Wants vs. Needs
Activity 4 Directions:
Brainstorm a list of things you need from the time you wake up in the morning to the
time you go to bed. Then brainstorm a list of things you want from the time you wake up
in the morning until the time you go to bed. Type your items in Microsoft Word,
centering vertically and horizontally in portrait orientation, following proper centering
rules. Come up with a title for your assignment and make sure to identify which items
are needs and which items are wants. Limit your wants to ten items. Save as Activity 4
in your Business and You folder.
Activity 5 Directions:
Answer the following questions listed below in the packet.
1.
Suppose you are stranded on a small, uninhabited tropical island. How would
satisfying your wants be different from satisfying them in your own community?
2.
Teenagers in the United States market economy spend more that $100 billion each
year for consumer goods and services. That figure is more that the GDP for many
nations in the world. What are some sources of money or income for teenagers?
Why do you think spending is so high for teenagers in this country?

Activity 8 Directions:
The number of Americans working in service-oriented businesses has increased while the
number of Americans working in production-oriented businesses has decreased.
Therefore, it is not surprising that one of the major expenses for American businesses is
computers and other related technology products. In addition, web sites are becoming a
much needed tool to the effectiveness of a business. Using Microsoft Word to type your
response, describe in at least a three paragraph response how computers and technology
are changing the way that businesses operate and thrive. Save as Activity 8 in your
Business and You folder.
Activity 9 Directions:
Select an industry or field that interests you. Look for jobs from that industry or field in
the classified section of your local newspaper on the Internet. You may use
www.monster.com or www.syracuse.com. Print at least one job posting from the Internet
in your field of interest and answer the following question below: How has computers
change the way we look for jobs?

Culminating Activity
Select one of the following activities to complete and save as Culminating Activity in
your Business and You folder.
1. The use of e-commerce, buying and selling over the Internet, is becoming more
widespread. Based on your knowledge of online shopping, e-commerce and what you
learn through reading current articles, write a brief paper of at least three paragraphs
about what e-commerce is and how you think e-commerce and online shopping will
affect the marketplace. Consider questions such as: will it be easier to make decisions?
Will decisions be made too quickly? How might the decision-making process be
affected?
2. Before you ever get tangled up in the cyber web of a hacker’s delight, educate
yourself on the common ways a hacker might steal important personal information. You
can do this by finding an article about hacking to read. Write a summary (at least five
sentences) about the article, making sure to cite your source. Once you have found this
information, use the computer to create a “wanted” poster. Make sure to include
specifically what your hacker is “wanted” for.
Final Project:
Imagine the following businesses were planning to locate in your community: a
computer manufacturer, a supermarket, a dvd store, and a health-food restaurant.
Explain, using MS Word, where you would put each business and give at least two
reasons why. Also, determine a fifth business that would be a good fit for your
community. Give at least two reasons why you chose that business, where that business
would be placed in your community, and at least two reasons why you chose that
location. Save as Activity Final Project in your Business and You folder.
