4th Call for Project Proposals – Deadline 30 October 2010
Objectives
The aim of Novo Nordisk-Chinese Academy of Sciences Research Foundation is to fund or
co-fund activities of common interest within the fields of Biopharmaceuticals & Diabetes including
related disciplines and technologies such as protein chemistry, immunology, inflammation,
endocrinology, diabetes, pharmacology and drug delivery.
Call for proposals
NN-CAS Foundation invites relevant partners to submit applications to both CAS and NN. Next deadline
is 30 October 2010. The applications must be submitted in one e-mail to Ms. WANG Dongyao at
dywang@cashq.ac.cn, Professor Wang Ming-Wei at wangmw@mail.shcnc.ac.cn, and Dr. WANG
Baoping at baop@novonordisk.com.
Field: Protein Sciences and Technologies relating to Human Diseases.
Proposed projects may include, but not be limited to, proteins and peptides as disease markers, drug
targets, transcription factors, mediators, etc. applicable to the understanding of pathogenesis,
diagnosis, treatment, prevention or prognosis of human diseases. Proposals to develop relevant
technologies, methods and experimental approaches that may facilitate the medical utility of such
proteins or peptides are also encouraged.
Who can apply ?
Any scientist with a PhD degree (or equivalent) and with formal employment at CAS (applicants must
hold associate professorship or above) or NN may apply. The above scientist can also apply on behalf
of a PhD student or a young PhD working in his/her laboratory for a PhD or a post-doc fellowship.
Applications should preferably be jointly submitted by a scientist from CAS and one from NN R&D.
Other parties, e.g. universities in Denmark and Sweden, may be partners in selected projects but will
then need to fund their own participation.
Applications
Applications must be submitted on an application form that can be downloaded at Download

Each application must provide:

Title and an executive summary of the project (max half a page)

A statement (max half a page) on how the project, if funded, could help to promote collaborations
between CAS and Novo Nordisk.

A statement on how the parties have agreed to handle IPR or confidential information related to the
execution of the proposed project.

If applicable, co-funding, in cash or in kind, by any of the parties, must be clearly specified as this
may be considered a positive selection criterion.

A consent letter to enhance communication between co-applicants and to acknowledge the
foundation in publications supported by the Foundation.

The following activities (joint research projects, exchange visits, workshops and PhD and post-doctoral
fellowships ) will be accepted. The CAS partner of each project can receive the amount specified below.
Novo Nordisk will pay for normal expenses associated with the participation of Novo Nordisk scientists
in projects funded or co-funded by NN-CAS Research Foundation. Co-funding by any of the applicants
will be a positive selection criterion. Chinese, Danish or Swedish Universities that may add value to the
project, may become partners. Normally that will require co-funding from these third parties. Mobility
of people between China and Denmark are particularly encouraged.
A: Joint research projects: up to 250.000 RMB per year for two years

Must involve both CAS and NN scientists.

B: Exchange visits: up to 60.000 RMB

CAS scientists visiting NN, including NN China R&D Center.

NN scientists visiting CAS.

CAS scientists visiting a University or Research Institute collaborating with NN.

C: Workshops and symposia: up to 120.000 RMB

Meetings with the purpose of identifying new potential fields of collaboration. NN-CAS
Foundation will pay maximum 50% of total costs.

D: PhD fellowships: up to 120.000 RMB per year for three years

Chinese PhD students working on a joint project in collaboration with one or more Chinese,
Danish and/or Swedish universities and mainly based in Denmark/Sweden.

Danish or Swedish PhD students working on a joint project in collaboration with one or more
Chinese, Danish and/or Swedish universities and mainly based in China.

In both above cases, NN China R&D Center could be a partner.

E: PostDoc fellowships: up to 200.000 RMB per year for two years

Chinese post-doctoral trainees working on a joint project at NN (including NN China R&D center)
or at a CAS institute possibly in collaboration with a Danish or Swedish university.
