Andrew Orton is a structural engineer and has worked in consultancy as well as in teaching and research. He took a degree in the Mechanical Sciences Tripos at the Department of Engineering, Cambridge University, followed by a postgraduate course at the Centre de Hautes Etudes de la Construction, Paris. Except for a short period teaching in the Department of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, he has worked almost exclusively on the structural design of buildings and highway structures, taking a particular interest in the overall design concepts. He left full-time consultancy to join Corus Tubes and retired from there as Construction Research Manager in 2010. He is still involved in research. He is the author of two books about structural design and has co-authored various papers concerning the research ideas developed.
