Independence Movements: America’s Influence
The Declaration of Independence had significant influence on other independence
movements throughout the world. Organize into groups of 4 and choose one of the
following independence movements to research:
 French Revolution
 Latin American independence movements
 Tiananmen Square demonstrations
 The breakup of the Soviet Union
Use library and Internet resources to learn about your assigned movement and the effects
that the Declaration of Independence had on the movement.
2-3 page research paper: Create a 2-3 page research paper discussing the history of your
topic’s independence movement; discussing the American Revolutionary War’s impact
on your topic’s independence movement; along with the impact of America’s Declaration
of Independence.
Powerpoint Presentation: Create a powerpoint presentation summarizing your
information from your paper and prepare to give an oral presentation in class.
Here is some information you may want to include in your paper and your powerpoint
while researching:
1. Provide a brief history about the origin of your chosen movement’s country.
2. What were some issues or events that caused the independence movement?
3. Who were the major leaders (playmakers, catalysts, etc) with the
independence movement?
4. How did the American Revolution or America’s Declaration of Independence
have an impact on your topic’s independence movement?
5. What were the results (outcome) of the independence movement?
6. Did the U.S. ever play a direct role in the independence movement of your
chosen topic?
7. Compare and contrast any declaration of independence documents of your
topic to America’s Declaration of Independence.
8. Any other historical information you think is valuable to your paper/powerpoint.
