New UNCE/campus collaborations for FY08 Since July 2007, UNCE has funded special projects in collaboration with campus faculty. These have included: Collaboration with two COE faculty to on professional development workshops to provide teachers with the skills and confidence to teach UNCE’s PEACE program that promotes formation of civic habits among early teens and pre-teens and to begin to equip them with the necessary civic skills of public deliberation, critical analysis and informed dialogue. This programming will begin in March. Collaboration with a faculty member in the School of Nursing to design and deliver a breastfeeding class to be offered to UNR students (undergraduate and graduate) to prepare them to become “peer counselors.” Those trained will provide hands-on services at a to-be-established drop-in lactation clinic within the Orvis Nursing Clinic. Materials for this course are drawn from Cooperative Extension curriculum and faculty from UNCE and Nursing are currently working to adapt the curriculum for this new audience. It is anticipated that the class will be offered in the Fall. Collaboration with a faculty member in CASAT to help design curriculum pertaining to healthy lifestyles as an alternative approach for weight loss and desire for increased energy as opposed to use of illegal drugs. The curriculum will be written so substance abuse counselors can use it. To date, UNCE and CASAT faculty have submitted a grant together, identified three substance abuse sites in the Southern Area to pilot test the curriculum, and started working on the curriculum. IRB paperwork will be submitted in the next few weeks. They expect to pilot one program by June 30, 2008. Collaboration with the Nevada Latino Research Center on a statewide education needs assessment of Latinos. The needs assessment, entitled Assessing the Research and Education Needs of Latinos in Nevada, has been approved by the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) and is currently being administered. Collaboration with the Department of Geography to conduct GIS mapping training for UNCE 4-H youth and staff. Faculty have been working jointly to identifying needs and set up guidelines for the training. They are currently working to obtain the site licenses and install the software on laptops. The training is scheduled for March. Collaboration with a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics on program evaluation related to Food Stamp Nutrition Education Program as well as pediatric and school nutrition. Collaboration with faculty in HDFS and Resource Economics to expand the information available on the Web related to Just in Time Parenting, Financial Security for All and Entrepreneurs and their Communities. Research-based information will be provided in a format appropriate to the intended audience. Information on entrepreneurship will use streaming voice-over PowerPoint presentations and videos. This will allow education and information materials to be more readily accessible through Internet and IPOD devices.
