Examples of Collaborations between University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and Other NSHE Institutions University of Nevada, Las Vegas The 20-acre Center for Urban Water Conservation in North Las Vegas is a collaboration between UNCE and UNLV’s College of Science. The focus of the center is education, research and demonstrations to the residents of southern Nevada on issues related to the use of water and horticultural crops in urban and peri-urban landscapes. The Center provides educational programs and research opportunities for UNLV students participating in their horticulture program in conjunction with the College of Southern Nevada. Faculty from UNCE and UNLV’s Survey Research Center are collaborating on the writing of a grant to survey seniors -- 1200 seniors in Clark County, 1200 seniors in Washoe County and 1200 seniors in rural counties. They will publish the results of the survey. UNCE holds a pruning seminar on the UNLV Campus for landscape professionals. Master Gardeners have become a vital part of Cooperative Extension's ability to provide consumers with up-to-date, reliable information. Master Gardeners receive extensive training and in return agree to volunteer at least 50 hours back to Cooperative Extension yearly. UNLV’s Dawn Newman has been one of the instructors for the program. UNLV nutrition interns are placed with UNCE faculty to fulfill their dietetics internship requirements. Desert Research Institute Collaborations between UNCE, DRI, UC-Davis and agency personnel include networking and coordination of educational and research programs at Lake Tahoe. Desert Research Institute hosted a one-day symposium addressing the state of wildfire research in Nevada. The conference was part of the inaugural Nevada Wildfire Awareness Week, lead by UNCE, and provided a forum where scientists and land managers from the DRI, UNR and state and federal agencies could discuss how science findings are currently being applied to land management and where land managers need science to help them make decisions. DRI, UNCE and the Las Vegas Valley Water District collaborated on research conducted on nine golf courses located throughout the Las Vegas Valley that examined the impact of re-use irrigation water on turf quality. UNCE and DRI faculty collaborate on noxious weed projects and research. Western Nevada College In a University of Nevada Cooperative Extension needs assessment, Churchill County seniors identified the need for nutrition education classes. UNCE teamed with WNCC to offer a 13 week nutrition education course to residents of Churchill, Clark and Pershing Counties utilizing the interactive video system. College of Southern Nevada UNCE collaborates with the Management Assistance Partnership through CSN to provide space for programs in southern Nevada. CSN’s Patrick Leary has been an instructor for the Master Gardener program. Currently, discussions are underway to include Master Gardeners as guides for CSN field trips. Truckee Meadows Community College UNCE nutrition, youth and horticulture specialists together with Heather Graham from TMCC piloted an innovative program aimed at lowering the risk of childhood obesity and diabetes. Veggies for Kids helps students learn about nutrition and horticulture by growing their own plants indoors and in a school garden that they help design and plant. The program was funded by the Nevada Trust Fund for Public Health, from Nevada tobacco settlement monies. The TMCC webmaster was contracted to redesign the UNCE website to bring it up to federal guidelines for accessibility and make it faster and more userfriendly. UNCE collaborates with Crystal Swank from TMCC on the statewide child care training program, which includes a training needs assessment for child care worker training, self-study guides for child care workers, and recognizing and reporting child maltreatment. Great Basin College Great Basin College hosts the website for UNCE’s Project MAGIC. Project MAGIC is an award-winning program for first time juvenile offenders. Interactive video sites in Battle Mountain and Elko are jointly supported by UNCE and Great Basin College. The Elko County Office of UNCE is located on the GBC campus. UNSOM Childhood obesity prevention in Nevada is a goal of Mom’s Special Gift, which promotes the benefits of breastfeeding. Through this program, UNCE distributed more than 10,000 breastfeeding fact sheets, and trained a dozen School of Medicine pediatric residents, 16 public health nurses and eight hospital nurses. Additionally, students from several of the NSHE institutes have been hired for part-time work on UNCE projects.
