Synthetic bone substitutes are introduced to overcome these limitations. The present study aimed to compare osteogenic properties of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic (Osteon) and bovine bone mineral (Bio-Oss). Summarize your research project in 250 words or less. You must include the identified problem, methods and processes of conducted study, results and conclusion. Materials and Methods: Four round defects of 6.5 mm in diameter were prepared on the calvarium of twelve rabbits (48 defects). Three sites were filled with 1) Bio-Oss, 2) small (SOsteon) and 3) large (L-Osteon) particle Osteon, and the fourth was 4) left empty as control. After 4 and 8 weeks, rabbits were sacrificed and histological and histomorphometrical examinations were performed and the data were analyzed by Friedman, Wilcoxon, and Multiple Comparison Mann-Whitney U tests. Results: Inflammation: significant differences were found between control and Bio-Oss (p = 0.008), control and S-Osteon (p = 0.013), control and L-Osteon (p = 0.011), and Bio-Oss compared to S-Osteon (p = 0.029) and L-Osteon (p = 0.023) after 8 weeeks, respectively. Foreign body reaction (p < 0.05): L-Osteon and Bio-Oss respectively showed the most and the least foreign body reaction in our study. L-Osteon showed more inflammation and foreign body reaction than the other groups. There were no statistically significant differences in bone fill between the four groups (p > 0.05). The scored bone regeneration was the only variable which showed to be significantly higher after 8 weeks compared to those of after 4 weeks regarding Bio-Oss group (p = 0.038). Conclusion: Although it may be concluded that biphasic calcium phosphate ceramic and bovine bone mineral have similar osteogenic potentials, further studies seem necessary.
