Unit 2 – Taking Care of my Body

a) Health & Well Being v Understand and appreciate what it means to be healthy and to have a balanced lifestyle v Realise that each individual has some responsibility for his/her health and that this responsibility increases as he/she gets older v Begin to develop strategies to cope with various worries or difficulties that he or she may encounter v Be aware of the dangers in using tobacco or alcohol and explore the reasons why people may choose to smoke or drink v Know and understand the meaning of the word ‘drug’ and when it is appropriate or inappropriate to take drugs v Identify and categorise a variety of substances that are taken into or onto the body into those that are helpful or harmful, legal or illegal v Recognise and discuss some people who are concerned with health and welfare b) Knowing About My Body v Realise the importance of caring for and treating his/her own body, and that of others, with dignity and respect v Understand the physical changes taking place in both the male and female body v Realise that these changes do not occur at the same time but nonetheless are predictable and natural and that being different is normal v Recognise and practise good personal hygiene, know how it is maintained and understand its importance in social interaction v Understand and explore the relationship between health and hygiene v Recognise the adverse effects of sexual stereotyping and realise that these effects can become more exaggerated as the physical differences between males and females are more apparent c) Food and Nutrition v Differentiate between a healthy and an unhealthy diet and appreciate the role of balance and moderation v Recognise the wide choice of food available and categorise food into the four main food groups and their place on the food pyramid v Examine the dietary needs of his/her own age group and other groups in society v Explore some factors that influence the consumption of different food products v Discuss and examine the importance of proper food hygiene.

Unit 4 – Safety and Protection

a) Personal Safety v Explore the rules and regulations that exist in school, at home and in society and the importance of adhering to these rules for keeping himself/herself and others safe v Identify people, places and situations that may threaten personal safety v Begin to assess the consequences of risky behaviour v Begin to realise that as independence increases, responsibility for personal safety increases, and that a strategy for keeping safe with people has to be developed and adhered to by each individual
