GETTING TO KNOW DICTIONARY – 5 Step Plan

STEP ONE: 1–1.5 hours

1.

Organize words in alphabetical order:

Choose a list of words connected to a field, for example, sports (coach, court, ball, referee, goal, etc.).

2.

Organize words in alphabetical order when the first letter is identical, but not the second.

3.

Organize words in the alphabetical order when the first and the second letters are identical.

4.

Find the words in the dictionary.

5.

Test STEP One.

STEP TWO: 1–1.5 hours

1.

Choose a page from the dictionary and copy it onto a transparency. Stress ONE word.

2.

Show the page to the pupils.

3.

Explain the meaning of the small numbers ----- PARTS OF

SPEECH

4.

Explain the meaning of the big numbers -------

MEANINGS

5.

Give the pupils a list of words that belong to different categories (noun, verb, adjective) and ask them to present them in a table:

6.

Give the pupils a list of words adding the part of speech and ask them to translate into Arabic:

Test STEP TWO.

STEP THREE: 1 -1.5 hours

1.

Give the pupils a list of sentences from Level B Reading

Passages and underline a key word. Ask them to translate the word.

2.

Do the work in class, then do it as a test.

STEP FOUR: 1–1.5 hours

1.

Deal with word order on the board. Explain the rules

2.

Prepare a list of noun phrases and ask the pupils to translate.

3.

Prepare a list of verb phrases and ask the pupils to translate.

Insist on the differences of translation.

4.

Test STEP FOUR.

STEP FIVE: As Much Time As Possible

1.

Give the pupils a reading passage.

2.

Underline the title, the first sentence and the last sentence.

3.

Ask the pupils to translate.

4.

Underline KEYWORDS.

5.

Ask the pupils to translate the keywords.

6.

Test STEP FIVE.
