The gallery has sprung from a desire by the church community to encourage emerging artists and community groups interested in exploring art that elevates the soul. The gallery is based on the premise that “I have come that they may have life, and have it abundantly”.(John 10:10) It is grounded in a conviction that art as a means of expression affirms a deep spiritual need for expression that when shared draws others to wonder. This year the Gallery is inviting artists to explore their understanding of God by offering a Religious Art Prize, along the theme living waters. Water is essential to life, so what does it mean to extend our understanding of water so far as to wonder about why it is living water? Is there more to water than an element? How does the play between element and symbol occur? Are we prompted to consider nourishment, which is core to our being as bedded in an awareness of God? Almost every religious tradition draws on the image of water as core to life, physically and spiritually. Jesus himself draws on a rich Jewish tradition, which reflects around the place of living water. In an encounter with a Samaritan woman who seeks water at a well, he challenges her to drink of living water, claiming “the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” (John 4) I wonder how you as an artist might consider this concept, and where it might take you in your reflection. In times of drought and flood, where water and its lack is felt keenly, what might living water look like? How might it be encountered? The Prize hopes to encourage artists who are grappling with what it means to reflect theologically upon the theme, exploring the experience of a God who extends and challenges life experience, and delights in the richness of life in relationship. Involvement in the process of this Prize is intended to enrich the Spiritual experience of the artist, and indeed, to extend an invitation to all who view the exhibition to reflect upon understandings of living waters.
