Performance - Training Objectives
With respect to the target language, the
student can:
- extract the meaning of and reproduce
in English the content of familiar
phrases and short simple sentences
about everyday needs related to
personal and survival areas;
- extract the meaning of and reproduce
in English the content of concrete
utterances, basic questions and
answers, and very simple
conversations;
- answer questions in English following
narration that uses the simplest ways
of expressing past, present or future;

narration that uses simple sentence
structures for positive and negative
statements;
express the meaning in English of
spoken language that uses
vocabulary in everyday situations
such as dealing with numbers, dates,
meals, lodging, weather,
transportation, time, basic directions,
and basic instructions;

Conditions
- Communication situation is clear and
supported by context.
- Speech delivered at slower than
native speaker speed and with little
or no sound interference.
- Face-to-face communication,
predictable telephone conversations
and recorded messages.
Bilingual exam conditions:
1 x 6 min Military Listening
1 x 6 min Social Listening
For each task there is 1 min to read a
briefing and 5 questions (in English)
before listening to a passage ~100
words in length spoken at 120 words
per minute. The candidate will hear the
passages twice with a 1 min pause
between and a 2 min pause at the end
in which to answer the questions. The
pass mark is 4/5 for each task, it is
necessary to pass both parts.
Standards
To the standard of NATO STANAG
6001 Language Proficiency Level 1
(Listening) as follows:
- even native speakers used to
speaking with non-natives must
speak slowly and repeat and reword frequently;
- comprehension of gist of texts
conveyed by disembodied
media if no interference to
transmission;
- often needs to seek clarification
from native speakers on
individual details of
announcements and messages.
