Miss Bridget Golden LCC Classroom Mrs. Margaret Kristufek-classroom/1:1 aide Mr. Brad Vanderberg-classroom aide Student Assessment, Grading, Homework, and Curriculum Dynamic Learning Maps Assessment Classroom Expectations and Procedures Teacher/Parent Communication Classroom Forms LCC Introduction: The LCC classroom at Conrady Junior High is a learning centered environment that caters to each individual learner in the classroom. Students follow an individualized schedule throughout their day to participate in 1:1 and group instruction in the areas of math, reading, social studies, and science. In addition, we expose students to instruction in life skills, health, goal-planning, social/emotional skills, and transition skills. Instruction is based on the IEP goals of each student in correspondence with monthly curriculum maps. In this structured, self-contained, and cross-categorical environment, the goal is to teach students the content areas at a level that meets the students at their cognitive and adaptive levels. Student Assessment, Grading, Homework, and Curriculum Students will be individually assessed on their goals that they will be working on throughout the year. The goals that each student will be working on are from their individual IEP (Individualized Educational Plan). These assessments will include both informal and formal teacher assessments. The assessments will be conducted to show a student’s progress or regression toward a specific goal. Students will be graded throughout the year on different assignments. These assignments will include homework, assessments, classroom work, and participation. Grades will be given on an individual basis. Report cards will be distributed as noted on the IEP; therefore, if your child does not have report cards on the IEP, they will not receive a report card. However, all students will receive a IEP Goal Update quarterly. Homework will be given to each student during the course of the year. Homework will be given to a student as the teacher deems it appropriate. All homework that will be given will reinforce skills that were learned and practiced at school. The curriculum that is followed in the classroom is guided by monthly curriculum maps for Reading and Math. In addition, the curriculum is heavily guided by the individual goals of each student, in accordance to each of their IEPs. The classroom curriculum correlates with the Common Core Standards and the Dynamic Learning Maps Essential Elements (which are modified versions of the common core standards). Dynamic Learning Maps Assessment (DLM) Each child will participate in the assessment in the spring. Based on teacher input into a student profile system, assessments are individualized on the needs and capabilities of each student. Accommodations given to each student for the assessment are based on each child’s current IEP. The brochure below highlights more information about the DLM. The Dynamic Learning Maps™ (DLM) project offers an innovative way for all students with significant cognitive disabilities to demonstrate their learning throughout the school year via the DLM Alternate Assessment System. Traditional multiple-choice testing does not always allow students with significant cognitive disabilities to fully demonstrate their knowledge. By integrating assessment with instruction during the year and providing a year-end assessment, the DLM system maps student learning aligned with college and career readiness standards in English language arts and mathematics. Classroom Expectations and Procedures Classroom Rules 1. 2. 3. 4. Raise your hand. Listen to your teacher. Use nice words. Be a friend. Classroom Behavior Plan During the course of the day, students earn dollars for the behavior and work ethic. After each every 20 minute station, students have the opportunity to earn a dollar. At the end of the week, dollars are totaled and students have the opportunity to “cash in” their money for a weekly prize. Classroom behavior plans can also individualized based on the needs of each student and targeted replacement behaviors. Assignment Notebooks Assignment sheets are used to provide homework and announcement information to parents and students. Assignment sheets are for one week: Monday through Friday. Students write their homework in their assignment book daily and it is expected for them to complete this homework each night. Chromebooks Students with Chromebooks have access to and frequently use Chromebooks throughout the course of the school day. For safety precautions, many parents have requested that their child’s Chromebooks remain at school. Please contact me individually if you have any questions or concerns regarding your child’s Chromebook permissions. Student Folders Students have one folder to take home every night. Parents and students should go through this folder every night. Please take out the forms, newsletters, or announcements each night. Also, look for the daily “end of the day” communication sheet with notes about your child’s day. PE The students go to PE class every day. They will be changing their clothes for this class. Your student’s PE clothing will be kept at school during the course of the week. On Fridays, we will be sending home their clothing to be washed for the next week. Please make sure that the PE clothing is sent back to school on Monday with your student. Students also need deodorant to keep in their PE locker. Teacher/Parent Communication If you have questions or concerns, I can be reached by phone at 233-4565 or by email at bgolden@npd117.net. You may call me and leave a voicemail. I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you would like to meet for a conference, we can schedule a time to meet during the school day. If we are unable to meet for a conference, we can conduct a conference over the phone. Please check your student’s assignment notebook and take home folder every day. The teacher may write notes or comments on the “end of the day” sheet to the parent concerning their student. Parents may also write notes or comments to the teacher on this sheet. Tips for parents: Be consistent. Stick to a schedule Reward good behavior and model appropriate behavior.
