Bubbles (Explore It!)
NOTES:
Use 12” x 12” sheets of Plexiglas. Many
hardware stores will cut the sheets to size. PETG
is less expensive than cast acrylic. To save
money have your students share the two sheets of
Plexiglas. Optionally, you could buy more.
1-liter Soda Bottles are cut to form cylinders and
then duct taped together into tubes. (The guide
suggests using metal cans for this purpose;
however most modern cans are designed with
rimless bottoms that are not easily removed.)
Save the tops of the bottles as these may serve as
funnels in Exploration 5. Alternative: plastic
fluorescent bulb sleeves (see below).
A Plastic Tube (Light Bulb Sleeve) (optional) is a
narrow plastic tube that covers fluorescent lights.
These are found in the electrical section of your
hardware store and are sold in 4 or 8 foot lengths.
They can be easily cut into two foot sections
using scissors. These are optional items used in
place of bottle or can tubes in Exploration 3.
o Plastic Drop Cloth (1 mil) are used to cover the tables, keeping bubble solution off
floors and furniture. Heavier cloths tend to creases, which interferes with the bubbles.
o Dish Soap. Purchase 26-ounce bottles of both Dawn and Joy, along with smaller
amounts of other brands for comparison of their bubble making qualities. Use one cup of
dish soap to one gallon of water (Ratio of 1:16). Ensure the mixing container is clean as
residues may interfere with bubble making abilities of detergents. Refer to the notes on
Pages 3&4 of the curriculum guide for more information.
o Large bucket: used for mixing the bubble solution. Any large container can be used.
Mix all the bubble solution for each session in the same batch so that all groups have
equal bubble making success.
o Clear Plastic cups are used in Exploration 5. Clear is best in order to observe the
bubbles inside.
o Aluminum roasting pans are filled with 1-2 inches of bubble solution for each group.
o Newspapers are rolled to create a barrier or bumper along the edges of each table under
the plastic sheet. See page 22 of the guide for tips on how to prepare the work surface.

o The 2-liter soda bottles need to be cut. Use scissors to cut off the tops of the bottles
where the sides begin to become straight (see page 43 of the guide for instructions). Save
one for Exploration 5 if you are substituting for the one-gallon jar.
o The 12 –inch ruler is used as a handle for the plastic plate in Exploration #3. It is
attached onto the plate with duct tape. Rulers can also be used to measure bubbles.
o Four small blocks are used to hold each sheet of Plexiglas about 1 inch above the table
surface. You can use Lego blocks, wooden spools, corks, rubber bumpers or any other
similar sized small objects to prop up the Plexiglas. Ideally, these blocks can be wetted
in order to keep bubbles from bursting should they touch the blocks.
Optional Items
o SAFETY: The curriculum guide suggests using either glass or plastic-gallon clear plastic
jar Expl #5. It is recommended that only plastic be used. If you do not have a one gallon
jar use a 2-liter soda bottle with its cap.
o Assorted plastic containers are used in Exploration #5. The guide suggests cans but
yogurt containers, plastic cups and deli containers work just as well with no sharp edges.
For directions on set up for this exploration please read the guide pages 43 and 44.
o Funnels are optional (see Exploratory Demonstration on page 50 of guide). You may
want to purchase funnels of different sizes for your students to experiment. As a funnel
substitute, use the cut off top from a soda bottle.
o SAFETY: Utility knife is used to cut the tops off 1-liter and 2-liter soda bottles and to
score and cut Plexiglas. It should ONLY BE USED by adults.
o Yardsticks or measuring tapes are used to measure large bubbles.
