Get Rid of Old Stuff the Green Way
The Three Rs of Disposing of Household Items
If you spent the rainy days of April, May and, yes, June indoors cleaning and sorting, then
you’ve likely gathered piles of stuff you’re ready to bid adieu. Before you toss everything in
the trash bin, consider the Three Rs of easy and environmentally friendly options.
Reduce: On average we throw away nearly six pounds of garbage each day. Thankfully,
there are lots of ways to reduce the amount we toss. Check out RethinkRecycling.com's Top
10 Ways to Reduce Waste (http://bit.ly/11QnG7r) for some great green ideas, like using
reusable bags, buying in bulk and avoiding excess packaging. Holding a garage sale,
posting items on www.freecycle.org or donating to a thrift store are just a few ways to
reduce your inventory of stuff. Need a little inspiration to live with less? Check out
GetLESStoday.com.
Reuse: Mattresses, clothes and bikes, oh my! Many household items can be used
again. Remember the old adage: one man's trash is another man's treasure. Why not
try to find your unwanted items a good home? For a list of green ideas, visit the
Donations and Resale Opportunities webpage at http://bit.ly/16kv5Ac.
Recycle: What do appliances, car seats, TVs and computers have in common? They
are examples of larger household items that can be recycled after they're no longer of
use. Other household items, such as old paint cans, pool chemicals and fluorescent
bulbs, are hazardous and need to be taken to a drop-off site for safe recycling and
disposal. Visit Rethink Recycling at http://bit.ly/1496TiH to learn how to get rid of stuff
the right way.
A Fresh (Clutter-free) Start
Moving to a new home is a good time to sort out what you don’t need or want anymore. A
few simple rules can help.
The One Year Rule: If you haven't worn it, used it or even thought about it for a year, get
rid of it.

Rethink Recycling outreach efforts. Please help us track the use of Rethink Recycling materials by sending an e-mail
to Info@RethinkRecycling.com with a description of how the materials were used, the date(s) published, and the
estimated reach.
When in Doubt, Throw it Out: If you’re not sure you're ready to part with it, you
probably are.
Repair or Toss: Repair broken items or get rid of them. Taking the time to de-clutter
before hand will make moving day much easier.
