Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students a solid foundation course in English lexicology and
application of lexical semantics in practical lexicography. The course is dedicated to the
relation between the different theoretical approaches that dominated lexical research in the
course of the history of modern linguistics: the traditional approach, the structuralist
approach, the lexical semantics approach and cognitive semantics. Special focus will be
placed on the problem of the polysemy and the demarcation of semantic and encyclopaedic
knowledge, semantic relations, metaphor and figurative meaning. Special attention will be
given to some theoretical and practical issues in corpus lexicography.
