The course is dedicated to the relation between the different theoretical approaches that dominated lexical research in the course of the history of modern linguistics: the traditional approach, the structuralist approach, the lexical semantics approach and cognitive semantics. Special focus will be placed on the problem of the polysemy and the demarcation of semantic and encyclopaedic knowledge, semantic relations, metaphor and figurative meaning. Special attention will be given to some theoretical and practical issues in corpus lexicography. They should also be capable of reading scientific articles relating to lexicology and lexicography. Course content Lexicology vs semantics vs pragmatics vs lexicography Elements of lexicology and lexical semantics: definition of the terms: word-forms, lexemes, lexical units, mwlu, entry etc.; identification and classification of words issues in lexical meaning (referential, collocational, connotative meaning; semantic change, etc.); semantic relations: problems of synonymy and polysemy; antonymy, hyponymy Metonymy, metaphor, lexical units of figurative speech Syntagmatic relations: Multiple-word lexical units, collocations, phrases Paradigmatic relations: semantic fields and lexical sets Lexical elements of discourse, lexical signaling and speech acts Some issues of structuralist morphology Lexicology of names and the dictionary Etymology and word formation; History of lexicography & types of dictionaries The dictionary user Monolingual lexicography (word list, headwords, definition, phonological, grammatical and pragmatic information) 1 Bilingual lexicography (entry, mwlu, translation equivalents) Machine-readable dictionaries and elements of corpus lexicography Gathering data for dictionary compilation Dictionary definitions Lexicographic projects contrastive lexicology (English/Croatian); critical lexical analysis; vocabulary teaching.
