Grade 7 Science- Imaginary Organism Project
Outcomes:
306-3 describe interactions between abiotic and biotic factors in an
ecosystem
304-2 identify roles of producer, consumers, and decomposers in an
ecosystem and describe their diversity and their interactions
304-1 explain how biological classification takes into account the diversity
of life on earth
306-1 describe how energy is supplied to, and how it flows through, a food
web
306-2 describe how matter is recycled in an ecosystem through
interactions among plants, animals, fungi, and micro-organisms
209-5 select and integrate information from various print and electronic
sources or from several parts of the same source
210-1 Use or construct a classification key
208-4 organize data, using a format that is appropriate to the task

Your task is to create an imaginary organism that would survive in one of
the terrestrial or marine biomes. All of your information will be displayed
on full size Bristol board.
You need to include:
□-the name of your organism
□-a coloured drawing or picture of your organism
□-a description of the organism’s physical features
□-other characteristics of your organism (is it strong, fast…)
□-adaptations that your organism uses to survive in its environment
□-a paragraph with a clear description of the biome where your organism lives
(including the climate, vegetation, and other species)
□-where in the world your biome is located (a map would help)
□-the type of consumer your organism is (omnivore, herbivore, carnivore,
insectivore)
□-a paragraph explaining the importance of each type of consumer within your
biome (including decomposers)
□-a paragraph that clearly describes and explains a minimum of two positive and
two negative biotic and abiotic factors that affect your organism
□-a food web that clearly shows the flow of energy (with a minimum of 10
organisms, including your own imaginary organism, producers and the sun)

Class time will be provided to research and gather information related to this
project. The library (along with computers) has been booked for a number of
classes. Students will be responsible to make good use of class time and will be
required to complete follow up work at home. Rough copies must be edited and
included with the good copy. Use the checklist to ensure you have each of the
items included before passing in the final poster project. The final project will be
due December 9, 2011.
