PEER ASSESSMENT PROCEDURE School of Education School of Education PEER ASSESSMENT PROCESS The annual Peer Assessment Process is designed to support and assist faculty who seek to become excellent teachers, outstanding scholars and good citizens of the academic community. The Peer Assessment Process is also intended to guide faculty towards tenure and promotion and help identify faculty who perform meritorious service for the University. The faculty in the School of Education set the standard for faculty expectations. The faculty of the SOE have the responsibility to evaluate their peers and programs in relationship to the goals and objectives of the university. The faculty also have the responsibility to take a leadership role in resolving differences that may arise in assessment. I. Selection of Committee Members a. Each faculty member will have a two member Peer Assessment Committee that shall be set up within two weeks after the first departmental meeting in the fall of each academic year. b. Committee members should be selected from the tenured and tenure track faculty within each department, albeit, in some cases, it may be acceptable to include faculty from related disciplines within the School of Education. Ideally, at least one of the two Committee members should be tenured. c. Tenure track faculty having two (2) years of experience at FSU may also serve on the Committee. d. Ideally, faculty members should not serve concurrently on each other's committees. In other words, each Peer Assessment Committee should be set up in such a manner that no two faculty member will review each other at the same time. Moreover, committee members should rotate over time so that the same reviewer will not review the same faculty member in consecutive years. e. The Peer Assessment Committee shall be established as follows: i. The Department Chair shall select one member ii. The faculty member under review shall select one member. -1- II. Procedures a. One of the two Peer Review Committee members shall serve as Chair to call meetings and finalize the narrative of the approved Peer Evaluation document. b. At least one member of the Peer Review Committee will visit a class taught by the faculty member under review. c. Faculty will complete their self evaluation (their annual report) outlining their work in the previous calendar year and submit this along with a portfolio of supporting documents to the department by March 1st. The portfolio will be stored in the department office from where it can be formally checked out by the peer reviewers. d. The committee will submit its peer review by April 1st. e. In the event that the two members of the Peer Review Committee disagree, they will submit two separate reports. III. Appeals & Rebuttals In the event that the faculty member disagrees with the Peer Evaluation report(s), the faculty member will write a rebuttal to be submitted to the Department Chair. This rebuttal should be submitted within 10 business days of receipt of the report(s). -2-
