Generations
of Writers is an innovative oral
__________________________________
history
program that brings together youth and
__________________________________
seniors
to record and celebrate the stories of the
__________________________________
elder generation of the community. Founded by
__________________________________
writer Lauren Kirshner, the pilot session of the
__________________________________
program will take place in the County of Brant
__________________________________
from October 6, 2012 until November 17, 2012.
__________________________________
Under the direction Lauren, twelve teenagers
__________________________________
(“the story collectors”) will receive extensive
__________________________________
training
before being paired with a dozen
__________________________________
residents
of Telfer Place (“the storytellers”).
__________________________________
Through
successive meetings, the youth story
__________________________________
collectors
will encourage their partner storytellers
to __________________________________
share memories and impressions of some of
__________________________________
their
key life experiences. With the assistance of
__________________________________
Lauren and the storytellers themselves, this
__________________________________
material
will form the basis of a series of short
__________________________________
narratives which will be shared both through
__________________________________
public
exhibition in the community and through
an__________________________________
online museum of digital, textual and
photographic
narratives. By establishing a living
__________________________________
archive
- both digital and print - Generations of
__________________________________
Writers
preserves the past while looking to the
__________________________________
future,
and breaks down barriers between
__________________________________
generations,
one story at a time.
