Solubility Lab #2
Problem: What happens to solubility as temperature increases?
Hypothesis: How will temperature affect the solubility of water ability’s to hold sugar? Will increasing
the water’s temperature allow water to hold more or less sugar?

Materials: 50ml beaker, thermometer, sugar, spoon, stirring rod, hot plate, hot mitts
Procedure:
1. Take 100 mL of iced water and find the temperature in °C with the thermometer.
2. Place a spoonful of sugar in the water and stir with stirring rod until dissolved. Observe.
4. If the solution is still unsaturated, continue to add spoonfuls until it becomes saturated. Make sure to
stir with the stirring rod.
5. When it becomes a saturated solution, record the number of spoonfuls of sugar the iced water
dissolved before becoming saturated.
6. Now place the beaker on the hot plate. Use the thermometer to monitor the temperature of the water.
Take the beaker off once the water has reached near 25C.
7. Repeat steps 2-4.
8. Place the beaker back on the hot plate until the water temperature is near 50 Repeat steps 2-4.
9. Place the beaker back on the hot plate until the water begins to boil (70). Repeat steps 2-4.
10. Make a graph using your data.

25C
45C
65C
85C
Graph:
Graph the lab with the temperature on the X axis and mass of salt on the Y axis.
Do not forget to label and title the graph – use rulers to draw straight lines!
Conclusion Questions:
1. How did temperature affect solubility?
2. What type of relationship (positive or negative) is there between temperature and sugar
solubility?
3.
What is your evidence that temperature affects solubility?
