HORIZON HIGH SCHOOL Spiritline 2015 – 2016 SPIRITLINE TRYOUT PACKET General Information Important Dates Anticipated Expenses Checklist Application JV/Varsity Intent form GENERAL INFORMATION Horizon Spiritline is a combination of cheer and pom squads that promote crowd interaction and school spirit through cheering at football and basketball games as well as school assemblies. The competition teams also participate in several competitions throughout the year both in and out of state. Requirements/Commitment: Attend 3-4 practices per week as scheduled by coaches (more for varsity pom/cheer members) Cheer at all football and basketball games. Varsity will cheer at home and away football games on Fridays. JV will cheer at freshman and JV football home games on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Support other teams at HHS by attending games/events as spectators. Attend community service events throughout year Maintain a minimum of a 2.0 semester and cumulative GPA Must participate in fundraising Must possess good leadership and teambuilding skills Requirements/Commitment for Varsity Pom: Prepare for and attend all competitions. Attend all choreography dates in full (arriving late and leaving early will NOT be accepted) Must be positive and respectful to teammates and coaches, accountable, timely, responsible, and have good time management skills All squad members are subject to academic and behavioral policies of the school Returning candidates must have cleared their balance with Spiritline for prior years and returned uniforms before they can attend tryouts. For Varsity Only: Listed below are the skills we expect each varsity member to be able to complete. This list is nonnegotiable. If you cannot correctly complete these skills, you will not be placed on the varsity team. Please note this is the minimum expectation and is only a guideline. Other skills and technical elements will be included in determining the varsity squad: 1. Clean/consistent triple pirouette on at least the right side 2. Leg hold turn on at least the right side 3. Controlled pirouettes a la seconde on right side (2 counts of 8 pulled into double pirouette) 4. Toe touch at 180 degrees or higher Requirements/Commitment for Varsity Cheer: Must be an active member of the Spiritline. All spiritline duties take precedent over competition cheer duties Prepare for and attend all competitions. Attend all choreography dates in full (arriving late and leaving early will NOT be accepted) Must attend all summer practices, camp and practices during the school year Must attend and participate in all fundraisers throughout the summer and the school year. You will need to make the cheer competition schedule your priority. This means practices for cheer will come before practices for other sports/clubs if you choose to participate in other groups at school. The only exception to this is an on campus event or activity that is required for a class and is awarded a grade. Competition skills will be determined by the competition coaches IMPORTANT DATES PRIOR TO TRYOUTS: Anytime after March 14 and BEFORE Tuesday April 7th Pick up an athletic packet (available on HHS website). Complete a physical with your doctor, or care clinic. Once your packet is complete with the athletic office, the coaches will be notified. It is your responsibility to make sure all your paperwork is completed. Complete the Spiritline Tryout Packet and return this to Coach Amanati, not the athletic office. MANDATORY PARENT MEETING: Monday, March 30 at 7:00pm- Cafeteria We will have a brief question and answer meeting open to all parents and students interested in trying out for Spiritline/ pom or cheer. We will cover information such as practice schedules, financial commitments, and other expectations for the 2014-2015 season. SPIRITLINE APPLICATION DUE: Deadline Monday April 6th 2:30pm Please submit your spiritline application to Coach Amanati by Monday April 7th. You can drop off the application in room J108. TRYOUT APPERANCE Please come to tryouts appropriately dressed in a fitted shirt or tank and shorts with hair pulled back and out of the face. Wear appropriate footwear (i.e. tennis shoes, dance shoes). No street shoes will be allowed (i.e. Vans). NO JEWELRY OF ANY KIND. Fingernails must be trimmed at an athletic length with no polish. TRYOUT SCHEDULE: Tuesday April 7TH through Saturday April 11th 2:30 to 5:30: Instructional clinic in HHS main gym. Please arrive by 2:30 each day to get checked in. The clinic will start promptly at 2:45. Come dressed in appropriate athletic wear. The school dress code will be enforced. Saturday, April 11: Judged tryout beginning at 7:30am. Anticipated Expenses Competition Pom and Cheer are involved in school activities as well as many events and competitions outside of school. Our parent board makes every effort to provide fundraising opportunities throughout the season to offset expenses for families. Below is a list of anticipated expenses for the season. Please note: this is just an estimate and actual costs may differ. Camp: Estimated Cost: $600 (this is both for cheer and pom) (Cost estimations based on 40 girls. We try to provide everyone with cost estimates and dates in a timely manner to accommodate scheduling conflicts. We also try to offer as many fundraising opportunities as possible. It is important that each member is committed to attending all practices and games. By signing this pre-tryout commitment you are acknowledging the cost associated with being a member of a spiritline and time commitment that will be expected of each member if he or she makes the team.
