Rocks and Minerals Tic-Tac-Toe
Your job is to complete three boxes to make a “tic-tac-toe”. You will have 3 weeks to
complete the three assignments. Use the attached scoring guide to make sure your work is
the best it can be. Each box is worth 30 points, making the project worth 90 points. All work
will be stapled to this paper when completed. All work is due on Friday, October 30th .
1. Locate information about
one of the three types of
rocks (sedimentary, igneous,
or metamorphic). Write an
acrostic poem using what
you have learned about that
type of rock.
(In an acrostic poem, each
letter of the topic is the first
letter of a line.)
2. Rocks and minerals form
Earth’s crust, the thin outer
layer of Earth.
Find a diagram of Earth’s
layers.
Illustrate and label Earth’s
layers.
3. Research important
minerals found in the state of
Ohio. What are they?
Why are they important?
Include an illustration or
image of the mineral.
4. Choose your favorite
“rock” group, igneous,
sedimentary, or
metamorphic and design a
CD cover. Research and
include the following:
 Name of the group
 Origin of the group
(how they formed)
 Specific examples
 Uses for this type of
rock
 At least 2 illustrations
7. Gemstones are formed
from Earth’s minerals.
Diamonds are the most
valuable of these gemstones.
Identify a gemstone and the
regions on Earth where they
are primarily mined. Explain
the process by which your
gemstone is formed.
5. Identify the nutritional
purposes of the following
minerals:
Choose 3 and Choose 2
Calcium
Iron
Phosphorus
Iodine
Magnesium
Manganese
Potassium
Zinc
Sulfur
Copper
Sodium
Fluorine
Chlorine
6. Locate a model of the
rock cycle. Write a poem,
song, or cartoon about how
rocks change through the
rock cycle. Be sure to use
each type of rock’s name.
(sedimentary, igneous,
metamorphic).
8. Research the various types
of fossils found in Ohio.
Identify and describe at least
3 types of organisms that
formed the fossils. Explain the
process by which the fossils
formed.
9. Describe at least three
negative health effects of
one of the following:
asbestos exposure or coal
mining as a job.
Then write a persuasive
statement to a worker
employed in the field of
asbestos removal or coal
mining, warning them of the
dangers of their job.
