This is a brief description of the areas in which you can make a contribution: At the Build Site Construction - Volunteers with a wide range of skills and skill levels (tradespeople, skilled amateurs, and eager helpers) are required in all phases of the construction of a Habitat home. General Labour - Volunteers are also required as general labourers to complete a Habitat home. Catering Co-ordination - Volunteers are required to solicit meal providers and assist them in providing food for our volunteers. Meal Providers - Volunteers and volunteer groups are required to provide meals for our volunteers. First Aid - Volunteers with current Saint John’s Ambulance certificates are required on some sited. These volunteers may also participate in other activities on site. On a Committee: Church Relations - Volunteers are required to present the Habitat message to the Faith Community throughout the city. Communications - Volunteers with experience in public relations, advertising, or media relations are required to present the Habitat message to the general public. Construction - Volunteers with experience in construction, project management, materials acquisition, or building design are required to manage our construction activities, design Habitat homes, and acquire building materials at the lowest possible cost. Family Partnering - Volunteers are required to partner with Habitat families and help them through the transition from renter to homeowner. Family Selection - Volunteers are required to review Homeowner Applications, interview applicants, and recommend the families that will partner with Habitat to construct their home. Fund Development - Volunteers with fundraising experience and/or contacts within the corporate community, among community groups, or foundations are required to raise funds to support the Habitat program. Site Selection - Volunteers with contacts among the real-estate developers, or the City are required to maintain an inventory of developable l land for Habitat homes. Volunteer - Volunteers are required for recruitment, placement, scheduling, and recognition of the volunteers. At the Restore: Donations Sorters for the Volunteers are required to sort, price and merchandising the Paint, Lighting, Tools, donations received for each department Furniture, Books, Electronics, Hardware, Plumbing & Heating DepartmentsCashier - Volunteers provide frontline reception to customers, complete daily cash transactions, answer telephones and merchandise product. Housekeeping - Volunteers are required to help clean our ReStore, ensuring that we present a professional image to our customers Appliance Tester- Volunteers are needed to ensure donated household appliances (fridges, stoves, washers, dryers, etc.) are in good working order and ready for resale. Merchandiser Volunteers provide assistance to the ReStore by cleaning and merchandising product In the Office: Database Volunteers with experience with KAMLOOPSsoftware are Administration- required to manage our database and help Habitat utilize the information. Data Entry - Volunteers with general computer skills are required to enter data from various sources into our database Mailing - Volunteers are required on an irregular basis to fold and label newsletters, stuff envelopes etc. Newsletters - Volunteers with publishing experience are required to solicit material for our quarterly newsletter and prepare it for the printers. Office Administration - Individuals that can volunteer on a regular basis during office hours (½ day per week, twice a month, etc.) are required for general office duties. Word processing experience would be an asset. Other: Special Events- Trade Volunteers are required to represent Habitat at trade shows, Shows special events, (other events as required). Volunteers act as ambassadors for Habitat Kamloops, answering questions, providing educational materials and greeting the public. Special Events – Volunteers are also needed to help organize fundraising, Fundraising and marketing and appreciation events. Construction work can be dangerous & safety at sites is critical. Your and others’ safety is vital to the well being of Habitat for Humanity. Caution is the rule. Never put yourself or others at risk. Ask questions if you're not sure. Think before performing a task. Ask a ‘Crew Leader or Project Manager’ for help, if you're unsure. It is important to know and follow safe work practices – Always. SITE SPECIFIC Note the location of First Aid kit(s) and understand how to get emergency help (numbers to call, people to notify). Proper clothing & footwear is essential. Protect your head, eyes, hands & feet, as appropriate. It is mandatory that a Hard Hat be worn when people are working above you & it is required that appropriate CSA-approved Work Boots be worn when working on the site. It is mandatory to wear protective eye wear around tools where flying objects could be a danger. Understand the proper use of power tools. Ask a ‘Crew Leader or Project Leader’ for instruction, if you're unsure. Be sure tools are clean and defective parts are fixed before using. Check switches, cords, plugs for wear and ensure proper grounding is available. Avoid electrical shock by always using properly grounded electrical tools (some are 2 pronged plugs & must be inserted properly). Be careful when using power saws as the blade can bind and severe kick-back result. Inspect ladders before using. Keep a proper slope on the ladder, using the rule of 1’ of horizontal to each 4’ of height. Always secure the top & bottom before use. Never use metal ladders near electrical lines. Keep sites tidy of materials & supplies. Rubbish & scrap materials should be cleaned up on a daily basis. It is mandatory that safety ropes be used when working on top of the roof. The outcome of falling can be very severe. Direction on Safety from ‘Crew Leaders or Project Leaders’ must be followed. Youth 16&17 years or old must have written parental permission when working on any construction site. Youth under 16 years of age are not permitted on-site. Failure to follow the above guidelines puts you and others at risk.
