Volunteer Role Description Befriender Location: Various wards Hours: Various but not during protected mealtimes 8-9am, 12-1pm & 5-6pm Accountable to: Voluntary Services Manager Responsible to: Named Ward Staff Member Days / Hours: Minimum ½ day each week negotiated by mutual agreement, but on a regular, fixed basis. Main Aims: To spend time with patients who for one reason or another may not have many visitors. Key Duties: To establish and build a befriending relationship To spend time talking to the patient 1: Named Patients On request, to visit a named patient who requests a visitor. To chat or play board games; to read newspapers/books, share crosswords or word puzzles and to generally assist in making their hospital stay more amenable. 2: Ward Befrienders To visit a named ward on a fixed, regular basis to establish from ward staff whether a patient would like to chat or join in any of the above mentioned activities. Generally these would be Care of the Elderly wards. Person Specification The volunteer should be used to dealing with people, have a sympathetic approach and a polite and pleasant manner. The volunteer should possess excellent communication skills They should be responsible and reliable in their commitment, neat and tidy in their attire. General information Volunteers should not undertake duties outside this role description without checking first with their Volunteer Supervisor. Volunteers must not undertake any manual handling tasks or physical patient contact. A volunteer can offer emotional support and empathy but must under no circumstances offer advice or a medical opinion on a patient’s treatment or assist with anything of a clinical nature. Volunteers are reminded of the importance of confidentiality at all times. They must under no circumstances discuss patients’ affairs with any person other than the relevant staff. Volunteers are in place to complement the work of the paid staff and are not used to replace roles that are usually undertaken by paid hospital employees. Volunteers should receive regular support and supervision and training where applicable. Volunteers are bound by the “Volunteer Agreement” which includes their rights and responsibilities, and Trust Policies also apply to volunteers.
