Clinician Bio: Terry Nowacki
I am a life long horsemen. I became a equine educator because after 53 continuous years of either riding, competitive showing, or
professional training, I have developed proven training and coaching methods to share. My horsemanship philosophy is pretty much
summed up in the following two quotes; "Horses know what you know. They know what you don't know. They even know what you
think you know, but you don't." and "All horsemen are still learning, it's just that some are on different levels than others" (authors
unknown). I am best known for my research, clinics and proving public demonstrations given across the US on Equine Scent
Detection. As a professional trainer I have publicly proven my training methods in many disciplines of equine competition but my
specialty is equine sign language and equine air scenting. I am the author of two books; they are The Air Scenting Horse and my new
release which is the Equine Sign Language and Communication Journal. My diversified horsemanship experience is shown by some
of the accomplishments that I have earned over the years, some examples include AQHA Public Service Award, minor breed national
titles, Ranch Horse Versatility high point, earner of major breed national points in a variety of events, campaigning a state
champion/record holding race horse, vaquero horsemanship and coaching a junior rider to a state championship title. I am certified in
Equine Assisted Learning (for people). I own and operate an equine training center in Northern Minnesota. In 2013 alone I was hired
to 16 days of clinics coast on the west coast and three days on the east coast plus more in Minnesota. For more information you can go
to http://www.airscentinghorse.com/. Terry Nowacki's experience in search, rescue and recovery is well diversified. He is one of the
founding members, director and one of the training officers for the Marshall County Mounted Sheriff's Posse (80 plus membership
SAR group). While performing his official duties, he has been actively involved in operations, planning and logistics on different
major searches across a two state area. While working under law enforcement on actual searches, Terry's operations management
duties have included the following: Section Chief, Division Supervisor, Task Force and Strike Team leadership. The different search
tactics that he has been personally involved in include: Foot, ATV, Mounted, K-9 and Equine Scent Detection. In 2012 Terry was
acting Operation Section Chief for three major law enforcement searches.
Equine Air Scent Detection
Air Scent Detection is a natural instinct of horses where they either detect scent indicated by sign language or with training they detect
and follow the airborne scent to its source. The act of scenting is actually used naturally as a form of communication between horses
in a herd. This unique characteristic of the horse is being used for search and rescue, Law enforcement and as a natural horsemanship
game.
Equine Sign Language
During our clinic we will spend a lot of time learning about sign language, I am not talking about body language that is common
knowledge, but rather I am talking about newly discovered subtle sign language. Reading equine sign language is the whole key to
understanding and using scent detection. Scent detection is the only use that humans have for horses where knowledge and
understanding of equine sign language is 100% necessary to complete your goal. For SAR purposes, when most horses come across
the scent of either a live person or cadaver in an unexpected area (unexpected to the horse) they will naturally give signs. It most often
is not an excited heads-up-alert sign like most people expect to see, instead it is usually a series of small subtle signs that most
untrained people do not even recognize. The information I present on this subject goes way beyond common knowledge of equine
body language, I will show you examples of recently discovered equine sign language. For example, horses use a different set of sign
language for the following stages of scent detection, stages are as follows: 1. Searching for scent. 2. Picking up on the scent. 3.
Following scent drift. 4. Locating scent source. 5. Loosing scent. From information presented you can learn to document equine sign
language and use this knowledge to improve training techniques or to increase understanding between horse and rider.
