“BEHAVIORAL APPROACHES TO COUNSELING”
A behavioral approach to counseling encompasses many elements including teaching new
behaviors, encouraging desirable behaviors, as well as anticipating and planning misbehavior
management. Some of the techniques utilized for reducing problem behavior include
establishing clear ground rules, giving clear and calm instructions, outlining logical
consequences, administering rewards and consequences in a timely manner, and providing
interesting and enjoyable activities. Throughout the development of appropriate behavior
the mental health professional uses various prompts to shape appropriate behavior.
This event is designed to teach the process of using experiential therapies through
participation in experiential activities that promote personal growth, healthy relationships,
problem solving, and team building. The agenda includes a variety of activities and time for
personal and group processing. You have NEVER participated in an activity like this one.
Attendance limited to 40. No more than 12 LPC-I’s and three LPC-S. Other licensed
individuals are welcome. CEU’s can be negotiated with the appropriate licensing boards.
Please come dressed appropriately for the weather and casual (and maybe messy) activity.
You will need boots or other footwear that will adequately cover and protect your feet for
equine activities. All activities will be held outdoors but under cover. Restrooms available.
Bring a comfortable lounge chair and any other picnic-type accoutrements to ensure your
comfort!
State law requires that all participants sign a waiver indicating that they understand the risks
involved in being around horses. NO RIDING IS INVOLVED (All activities are done on the
ground. Those wishing to ride should discuss this with Linda to make arrangements for this
experience.) and all equine activities will be carefully supervised by a minimum of two equine
experts at all times. The horses used in the therapy are animals who have been around
people and have had training. Nevertheless, animals are unpredictable. Many people are
afraid of horses because of a bad experience in the past or simply because they are just plain
BIG! Fear in one’s life limits opportunities. If you wish to participate and have fears about
being around the animals, please sign up anyway. Talk with Linda about your concerns and
we will find a way to ensure your emotional and physical safety while you participate.
