The action of the novel, A Separate Peace, begins during the summer of 1942 at Devon School, an
all boys preparatory school. Set against the backdrop of World War II, the main characters attend
a summer school session, established to accelerate graduation and produce a supply of soldiers for
the war. In order to build background knowledge, you will be researching three elements related to
the physical and historical setting of the novel. You must provide a typed Works Cited page with
a minimum of three sources. The specific research requirements for each topic are listed below.
World War II – Axis Power: Germany
Research Focus: Identify important military and political leaders and their connection,
contribution, and importance in World War II. Also, identify the role this country played during
the war.
Research Source: Must be from a database, reference source (electronic or print), ebook, or
nonfiction book. You may not use the free internet for this topic.
Military Branch: Army
Research Focus: Identify this branch of the U.S. military and its specific functions during
World War II.
Research Source: Must be from a database, reference source (electronic or print), ebook, or
nonfiction book. You may not use the free internet for this topic.
American Preparatory/Military/Boarding Schools
Research Focus: Identify an American school and research its origin, history, and goals or
mission statement.
Research Source: You may use the free internet as a source for this research.
For each topic, you will need to provide a minimum 6 note/fact cards and 1 source card. Your
notes/facts should be summarized in your words. You may use direct quotes sparingly (no more
than ONE per source) if necessary to convey the information accurately. Source cards and
note/fact cards must follow the format taught in class. Using your source cards, you will then type
